Final Stats

Notre Dame, Ind. – The No. 3 ranked Northwestern Wildcats scored five goals in a 5:08 span midway through the second half to snap a 9-9 tie on the way to an 18-11 win over Notre Dame at the Loftus Sports Center on Thursday afternoon in the Irish home opener.

Sophomore attack Aly Josephs paced the Wildcats with five goals in the game. She got plenty of offensive help from junior Lindsey Munday who had eight points on the day (3 goals, 5 assists) and sophomore Kristen Kjellman who added four goals and two assists in the game.

Notre Dame was led by freshman midfielder Caitlin McKinney (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) who had three goals and an assist. Junior Crysti Foote (Suffern, N.Y.) added three goals for the Irish while sophomore midfielder Kaki Orr (Darien, Conn.) scored the first two goals of her collegiate career. Meghan Murphy (So., Centennial, Colo.), Kerry Van Shura (Jr., Bel Air, Md.) and Brittany Fox (Jr., Annapolis, Md.) added single goals for Notre Dame.

The loss drops the 20th-ranked (IWLCA coaches poll) Irish to 1-1 on the year while Northwestern is now 4-0 on the season.

Northwestern jumped out to a 2-0 lead on goals by Josephs and Laura Glassanos (first of three in the game) before Foote got her first of the year at 4:58 of the first. The teams traded goals from until the 20:00 minute mark when Fox scored on a free-position shot for the Irish to cut the Wildcat lead to 5-4. Northwestern would then run off four straight goals in a 5:38 span with Kjellman and Josephs scoring twice to build a 9-4 lead.

Foote got her second of the game with 2:31 left in the half and Orr scored twice in a span of 47 seconds to make it 9-7 at halftime.

The Irish kept the offense going in the second half as McKinney got her first of the game just 2:55 into the half and Foote tied the score at 9-9 with 18:17 left in the game.

From there though, it was all Northwestern as the Wildcats scored nine times in the final 17:11 of the game to just two for the Irish. Glassanos, Kjellman and Munday each scored twice while Josephs, Sarah Albrecht and Christy Finch added one each. McKinney added Notre Dame’s final two goals of the game.

On the afternoon, Northwestern out shot Notre Dame by a 32-25 margin. Ashley Gersuk had eight saves in goal for the Wildcats while Carol Dixon (Sr., Pennsauken, N.J.) had eight stops for the Irish.

Notre Dame now departs on its’ three-game spring break trip. The Irish travel to Cornell for a 12:00 noon game on Sunday, March 6. The Irish then visit Vanderbilt on Wednesday, March 9 for a 1:00 p.m. (CST) game and close the trip on Sunday, March 13 at James Madison. That game starts at 12:00 noon.
