Irish Fall to #1 North Carolina

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The #15 Fighting Irish took on #1 North Carolina in a Saturday morning matchup in Chapel Hill. The Irish eventually fell to the Tar Heels 15-7.

Bridget Deehan powered the Irish with 11 stops just in the first half of play, and 16 saves total.

Jackie Wolak led the Irish in goals with three while Madison Ahern led the Irish in shots with nine and was had two goals.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The first quarter opened up with massive saves from Deehan to keep the scoreboard blank until 3:58 left in the first quarter. Deehan tallied seven saves just in the first quarter. Notre Dame put up seven shots but could not get the ball to the back of the net.

The second quarter was much of the same story as both teams went scoreless with another four saves from Deehan. Coming out of a timeout in the second quarter Ali McHugh made North Carolina think twice as she spun out of her dodge to find an open lane for a goal. The goal put Notre Dame on the board with North Carolina leading 2-1. North Carolina went on to score three straight goals. The Irish responded with a goal of their own from Jackie Wolak. Notre Dame went into halftime down 5-2.

In the third quarter, North Carolina got out in front to power themselves to a 10 point lead, 12-2. Madison Ahern added to the Irish tally in the fourth quarter for the Irish’s third goal of the day. Kasey Choma also notched a goal on a free position attempt with seven minutes left in the fourth quarter. Wolak added two more goals for the Irish along with Ahern for an eventual final score 15-7.

The Irish will host Detroit Mercy on Tuesday April 5 at 2 pm at Arlotta Stadium in South Bend. Live stats will be available and the contest will be streamed live on ACCNX.
