Irish Fall in Four to Navy

NORFOLK, Va. – The Irish fell to Navy on Saturday, Sept. 10 in a four set loss (12-25, 27-25, 17-25, 25-27) and dropped to 3-5 on the season in day two of the Quest for the Crown Tournament. 

Lucy Trump led the way for the Irish today as she tallied 14 kills, followed by Avery Ross with nine kills and Kaylyn Winkler with seven kills. Phyona Schrader dished out 31 assists for the Irish and Hattie Monson recorded 13 digs. 

Set One 

The Midshipmen took a 3-2 to start set one and never looked back. Navy went on to extend their lead 18-5 and the Irish responded with a 4-0 run to close the gap to nine at 18-9. Notre Dame’s late efforts weren’t enough as the Midshipmen took home set one 25-12.

Set Two

Notre Dame came out strong in set two, posting an 8-5 lead over the Midshipmen. The Navy tied it up at 13-13 and 15-15, before taking their second lead of the game at 16-15. A kill from Lauren Tarnoff and a kill from Avery Ross made it even 17-17. The Irish and Midshipmen swapped points until Navy took the two point advantage at 21-19. A service error and two attack errors from Navy tied the game yet again at 23-23. A kill from Tarnoff gave the Irish a 24-23 advantage until the Midshipmen responded with a kill of their own for an even 24-24. A service error from Navy followed by a kill from Navy, made it an even 25-25. The Irish capped off the set with a block from Schrader and Winkler and an attack error from Navy to give Notre Dame the set two win at 27-25. 

Set Three 

The Irish trailed early as the Midshipmen came out taking an 11-4 lead over Notre Dame. A block from Phyona Schrader closed the gap to five at 12-7, but Navy would go on 7-1 run to extend their lead 19-8. The Irish and Midshipmen went point-for-point until the 22-11 mark, but the Irish would go on a 6-3 run to make it a 24-17 game. Navy was able to send home their final point to finish the set 25-17 and take the 2-1 advantage heading into set four. 

Set Four 

It was a close one to start the fourth as the Irish and Midshipmen came out with an even 6-6 and struggled to pull away from one another. Navy took the 10-4 lead, but two kills from Ross and a block from Schrader brought it within one at 10-9. The Midshipmen maintained the lead but couldn’t pull away from the Irish by more than three as a kill from Schrader brought it back within two at 16-14. Two kills a piece from Winkler and Ross would give the Irish an opportunity at the end of the set as the Irish trailed by one at 19-18 and an attack error from Navy made it an even 19-19. The Irish’s eight point run allowed Notre Dame to take the lead 22-19, but Navy was able to tie it up at 22-22. Another kill from Winkler made it an even 24-24 before a service ace from Maisie Alexander gave the Irish the 25-24 advantage. Two kills from Navy and a service error from the Irish gave the Midshipmen their final set win of the match at 27-25.
