Irish Fall in Four Sets to Boise State

LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Fighting Irish fell in four sets (18-25, 25-13, 18-25, 18-25) to Boise State on day one of the Long Beach State Tournament on Friday, Sept. 2.

Notre Dame was led by Lucy Trump with 13 kills and 10 digs, followed by Avery Ross with 12 kills. Kaylyn Winkler also chipped in nine kills, with Lauren Tarnoff recording five kills and four blocks for the Irish. Phyona Schrader finished with a career-high 42 assists.  

HOW IT HAPPENED

Set One

Despite trailing 5-0 to start, it didn’t take long for the Irish to close the gap. Kills from Avery Ross and an ace from Trump allowed the Irish to bring it within two at 7-5. The Broncos extended their lead to 15-10, but struggled to pull away as Notre Dame kept it within six until the final point of the set as the Broncos took home set one 25-18. 

Set Two

The Irish came out strong in the second set, taking an 8-2 lead early with Maddy Waumans and Trump leading the way with two kills a piece. Three kills from Winkler, along with Maddy Wauman and Lauren Tarnoff kills, allowed Notre Dame to extend the lead to 18-10. Boise State errors coupled with big time offense from the Irish gave Notre Dame a 25-13 win over the Broncos making it 1-1 going into the third set. 

Set Three

Notre Dame and Boise State had an even 2-2 start in set three until the Broncos went on a 3-0 run to take the lead 5-2. A kill followed by a block from Tarnoff helped swing the momentum in favor of the Irish and with an ace from Trump, it became an even 9-9 set. The Irish and Broncos would go on to swap points until Boise started to pull away and take the lead 16-13. Notre Dame brought it within two at 17-15 but the Broncos would go on to extend their lead to 21-15. Despite the Irish’s late efforts, Boise closed out the set to take the 2-1 advantage. 

Set Four 

Boise took an early 8-3 lead to start the fourth as the Irish struggled to slow down the Bronco offense. Two kills from Schrader along with kills from Trump and Winkler allowed the Irish to close the gap to 9-8. Boise went on a 12-5 run to take the lead 21-13. Notre Dame recorded three consecutive kills to bring it with five (21-16), but the Broncos would go on to take set four 25-18.

  • The Irish will face Long Beach State on day two of the Long Beach State Tournament.
  • Next weekend, Notre Dame is back on the road as they travel to Norfolk, Virginia as they take on East Carolina, Old Dominion, and Navy.
