Irish Fall In First Round At National Indoors

Doubles Main Draw | First-Round Doubles Consolation Draw

FLUSHING, N.Y. – University of Notre Dame men’s tennis seniors Josh Hagar and Eddy Covalschi fell in the first round of main draw doubles play on Thursday at the USTAITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships at the Billie Jean King Tennis Center.

The 26th-ranked Irish pair lost in three sets to Stanford’s Yale Goldberg and Sameer Kumar, 7-6(5), 1-6, 10-6.

Later, the Irish defeated Tennessee’s fifth-ranked Luis Valero and Jack Schipanski 4-6, 6-4, 10-4 in the first round of consolation play. They will face Denver’s No. 42 Alex Gasson and Yannik James at 5:45 p.m. ET Friday.

The rest of the Irish squad will begin action at the Gopher Invitational at 9 a.m. ET Friday at the Baseline Tennis Center at the University of Minnesota.

Joanne Norell, athletics communications assistant director at the University of Notre Dame, has been part of the Fighting Irish athletics communications team since 2014 and coordinates communications efforts for the Notre Dame women’s soccer, men’s tennis, women’s tennis and fencing programs. Norell is a 2011 graduate of Purdue University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in mass communication, and earned her master’s degree in sports industry management from Georgetown University in 2013.
