HOW IT HAPPENED
NC State got ahead early, after a single and a walk preceded a three-run homer from the Wolfpack’s Angie Rizzi . The Wolfpack entered the weekend ranked sixth in the NCAA in home runs per game. Holloway and the Irish were able to limit the damage, notching the final outs on a popup and a swinging strikeout.
Marquez got momentum going for the Irish, as she stepped up in the leadoff spot in the third to send her first homer outside the walls. Outs on the next three batters ended the inning at 1-3.
Abby Sweet, owning the ACC’s second-most doubles per game, slammed another double in the sixth. After taking third on a Miranda Johnson groundout, Sweet sped to home on a wild pitch to put the score within one. The inning ended 2-3.
Holloway ended the complete game with five strikeouts. Irish batters walked four times on the day, and Notre Dame boasted 12 putouts with no errors in Game One.
The Wolfpack again started off strong, as Rizzi homered again (her second of the day) to score two runs. Tidd struck out the final batter to limit the damage, ending the inning at 0-2.
NC State again sent one outside the park, scoring two runs with no outs. The Irish cleaned up nicely, taking care of the next three batters with two groundouts and a Tidd strikeout to end it at 0-4.
After two singles, a strikeout and a walk, the Wolfpack scored on a sac fly to make the score 0-5. NC State again loaded the bases before Emma Clark snagged a fly in right field to strand all three.
Biggio led off the inning with a homer to put the Irish on the board, her first of the season. After two groundouts, Marquez singled, but a subsequent groundout ended the inning.
After a pop fly, Marino singled and advanced to second on a subsequent passed ball. With a groundout to follow, Sweet slammed a single to score Marino, making the score 2-5.
Tidd retired all three batters on strikeouts, upping her game total to seven.
After a groundout and a single, Grimm got the subsequent bunt to Marino at first for the second out, and Marino turned it to Purcell for the double play at third, tagging the runner out and ending the inning scoreless.
Hanks walked to start the inning, and was called out on Marino fielder’s choice. Johnson doubled and scored Marino, and Johnson advanced to third on the throw. WIth the score at 3-5, Sweet flew into a double play to end the game.
