WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Notre Dame women’s swimming and diving team fell to Big Ten-member Purdue, 168-131, on Friday night at Boilermaker Aquatic Center. The Irish won six events, including both diving competitions, in front of a loud opposing fan base.
Cited for strong efforts on the evening was sophomore Lauren Stauder, who won the 200 breast in a B-cut time of 2:15.47, and divers Jenny Chiang and Allison Casareto, who continued their dominance of the one and three-meter dives. Chiang won the 1-meter dive and finished second in the 3-meter dive, while Casareto claimed the 3-meter title and finished second in the 1-meter.
Also earning victories for Notre Dame were Bridget Casey (200 fly), Emma Reaney (200 IM) and Kelly Ryan (200 back).
Junior Gracie Fredlake put together three top-three finishes, while sophomore Sarah Dotzel had a pair of second-place finishes. Both relay teams also earned second-place finishes.
The Irish (3-2) continue their recent road trip next Saturday when they head to BIG EAST rival Louisville for a 1 p.m. dual meet.
Event-By-Event Recap
1-Meter Dive
Chiang won her fourth 1-meter title of the year as she out-distanced teammate Casareto. Chiang finished with 308.93 points, while Casareto finished with 267.15 points. The one-two finish for Chiang and Casareto was the second of the season in the event. Also scoring points for the Irish was sophomore Kimmie Lisiak, who placed fifth with 234.15 points.
3-Meter Dive
For the third time this year, Casareto (296.03) and Chiang (292.13) went one and two in the 3-meter dive. The duo outdistanced the next closest competitor by over 40 points. It was the second 3-meter title for the freshman on the season. Fellow freshman Jordan Russell scored a point for the Irish after finishing fifth with 216.38 points.
200 Medley Relay
Notre Dame just missed out on first place in the 200 medley relay, touching the pad .23 seconds behind first place Purdue. The Irish got off to a strong start with backstroker Dotzel, but the Boilermakers made a comeback in the breaststroke and held on to the lead despite a strong push in the freestyle from freshman Hannah Bowen. Joining Dotzel and Bowen in the water were Stauder and Lauren Scott.
1,000 Free
Casey took second place in 10:13.09, with Purdue’s Lauren Roth winning the event in 10:06.64. Casey led through the first couple of turns, but Roth made a comeback, extending her lead throughout for the race’s final margin. Freshman Erin Foley (10:24.39) and junior Jaime Malandra (10:28.90) also scored points for the Irish, finishing fourth and fifth, respectively.
200 Free
Purdue’s Lauren Roth, just 15 minutes removed from winning the 1,000 free, won her second event of the evening, finishing the 200 free 1.16 seconds ahead of Notre Dame’s Ryan. Freshman Suzanne Bessire took fifth in 1:52.85 to score a point for the Irish.
100 Back
In another tight race, Purdue’s Amy Katz topped Dotzel at the wall by just .02 seconds. Dotzel trailed the entire race, but turned in a blistering 14.79 after the final turn to cut .20 seconds off Katz’s lead. Fredlake took third in 57.10.
100 Breast
Purdue’s Emily Fogle got a good start off the blocks and led throughout, winning the 100 breaststroke in 1:01.66. The Irish took second and third, as Stauder and Reaney finished in 1:03.29 and 1:03.48, respectively.
200 Fly
A pair of freshmen battled to the wall in the 200 fly, with Casey continuing her winning ways in the event, claiming first in 2:00.69. She has now won three of the four 200 fly events this season. Purdue’s Rhiannon Sheets finished just behind Casey in 2:00.71. Fellow freshman Melissa Scott took third and three points in 2:03.86.
50 Free
The Boilermakers claimed the top three spots in the 50 free as Lauren Nichols, Carly Mercer and Lauren Gustafso touched the wall with .09 seconds of each other. Ryan finished first for the Irish in 23.42, with senior Amy Prestinario following just behind in 23.52.
100 Free
Purdue took the top two spots in the 100 free, with Carly Mercer and Lauren Gustafso finishing within .40 seconds of each other. Prestinario followed closely behind in 51.40 to finish third. L. Scott scored one point for the Irish, finishing fifth in 52.76.
200 Back
Notre Dame won its second event of the evening as Ryan and Fredlake went one and two in the 200 back. Ryan led throughout, finishing in 2:01.47, with Fredlake right behind in 2:02.57. Ryan is now undefeated in backstroke events this season. The Boilermakers took spots three, four and five.
200 Breast
Stauder rallied in the final lap to win the 200 breaststroke in a NCAA B-cut time of 2:15.47. The sophomore held off Emily Fogle (2:15.58), who also earned a NCAA B-cut time. Reaney continued her impressive freshman campaign, placing third in 2:18.38. Sophomore Christen McDonough took fifth in 2:26.24.
500 Free
The Boilermakers touched the pad in first, second and third place to pick up 15 points. Casey was the first Irish swimmer to finish, earning fourth in 5:03.13. Foley was the fifth point-eligible swimmer to touch the wall, picking up a point in 5:05.38.
100 Fly
Sheets took her second top-two finish of the day, winning the 100 fly in 56.00. Dotzel, who finished second in 56.56, held a .01 lead after one length of the pool, but Sheets came on strong and led through the rest of the meet. Dotzel settled for second, with Prestinario (56.87) closely behind in third. L. Scott (57.40) took fifth to close out the scoring.
200 IM
Reaney won her second 200 IM title of the young season, dominating the field and winning by more than four seconds in 2:03.43. Fredlake (2:09.37) continued her strong meet with a third place finish, while senior Emily Barton (2:09.91) claimed fifth.
400 Free Relay
Leading from start-to-finish, Purdue won the 400 free relay in 3:25.83. The foursome of Ryan, Prestinario, L. Scott and Reaney took second in 3:27.19.
