Irish Fall at No. 2 Syracuse

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The No. 12 Fighting Irish fell to the No. 2 Syracuse Orange 15-7 on Saturday afternoon in a conference matchup.

The Irish had five goal scorers with Kelly Denes and Kristen Shanahan tallying two each. They were joined by Kasey Choma, Jane McAvoy, and Abby Maichin who each tallied a goal. Jackie Wolak led the team with five assists establishing a new career high.

Denes kept things even on the draw when the Irish wrangled in 12 draw controls, and Denes picked up six herself. 

The defensive unit for the Irish caused seven turnovers throughout the game with Grace Weigand and Keelin Schlageter each causing a pair. Lilly Callahan recorded seven saves in the matchup.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Notre Dame started the first quarter controlling the draw control. At the first media break the Irish had tallied all three draw controls of the game. Denes had tallied two out of the three with Mary Kelly Doherty picking up the third. The Orange found the back of the net with three goals for a lead in the first quarter. Denes scored a goal herself after Wolak found Denes in the eight meter to cut the lead 3-1. The quarter ended with Syracuse extending their lead to a 5-1 lead. The second quarter opened with the Orange extending their lead 6-1. Shanahan came out of a timeout firing to give the Irish their second goal of the game. Syracuse fired right back for a 7-2 lead. Shanahan found the goal again for the third Irish goal and her second of the game. The second quarter ended with a score of 10-3.

Coming out of halftime the Orange struck first but it took no time for the Irish to answer back. Wolak found Maichin who fired past the goalie to cut into the lead 11-4. The Irish kept the power going when Choma fired for her first point of the game and the Irish’s fifth goal. The Irish made it three in a row when Wolak found McAvoy to make it 11-6. Making it four in a row and holding Syracuse on a scoreless streak when the Irish fired again with Denes scoring making it 11-7 at the end of the third quarter.

The final quarter of the contest opened with a goal from Syracuse to extend their lead 12-7. Syracuse continued to extend their lead for an eventual final score of 15-7.

NOTRE DAME NOTES

  • Jackie Wolak has assisted five of the six Notre Dame goals and established a new career high for herself.
