IOWA CITY, Iowa – After an impressive day one at the Hawkeye Invitational saw the University of Notre Dame women’s swimming and diving team win four events, the Irish continued putting on a show on day two as they won two events highlighted by Katie Miller’s dominating performance in the 400 IM.

“Our team is being tough this weekend as they are all having to swim a lot of races,” said head coach Brian Barnes. “But good things are happening. We are getting best times as a team. That’s good to see. We are learning about the team this weekend. We are showing that we have depth.”

Notre Dame increased its lead to 82.5 points as the Irish have put up 552 points in two days. Second place Boise State has 469.5 points while Nebraska is in a distant third (317 points).

The Irish kicked Saturday night off in style by taking the 200 medley relay in 1:39.80 as freshman Catherine Mulquin, junior Emma Reaney, sophomore Catherine Galletti and senior Kelly Ryan by .73 seconds over Boise State.

Miller followed her 200 medley relay teammates with a convincing performance in the 400 IM as she won by over a second with a meet record performance (4:12.06) that was also an NCAA B cut. Joining Miller in the 400 IM was junior Bridget Casey, who placed fifth with a time of 4:20.23).

“She organized a pretty good race,” said Barnes. “She had a good game plan going into it by using what she learned in prelims. I was excited to see what she did in the night session. She is a tough kid.”

Notre Dame had quite the representation in the 100 fly as junior Courtney Whyte and Galletti tied for fourth with an NCAA B cut time of 53.97 while sophomore Genevieve Heidkamp took eighth in 56.11.

Despite just missing out on an NCAA A cut (59.22), Reaney suffered a rare loss in the 100 breast as she took second to Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s Emily McClellan, who powered to a meet and pool record NCAA A cut time of 58.76. Trailing just behind Reaney in third and claiming an NCAA B cut time of 1:01.21 was McDonough.

The Irish turned in a dominating performance in the 100 back, qualifying four for the finals. In the nightcap, Ryan took second (53.87), Mulquin placed fourth (54.75), Galletti claimed sixth (54.90) and Whyte finished seventh (54.95). All four times were NCAA B cuts and helped Notre Dame pick up 57 points in the event.

In the 3-meter dive, the Irish added to their overall lead as Lindsey Streepey took second (330.25 points), Allison Casareto secured fourth (313.30 points) and Emma Gaboury placed seventh (292.60 points).

Notre Dame closed out the evening with a runner-up finish in the 800 free as Ryan, Reaney, Miller and sophomore Suzanne Bessire touched the pad in 7:19.94.

The final day gets underway at 10 a.m. with the 200 back. Other events on day three are the 100 free, 200 breast, 200 fly, 1,650 free and platform.
