Irish Earn Sixth Seed In 2013 BIG EAST Men's Basketball Championship Presented by American Eagle Outfitters

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The University of Notre Dame men’s basketball team will be the No. 6 seed in the upcoming 2013 BIG EAST Championship presented by American Eagle Outfitters to be held March 12-16 at Madison Square Garden in New York, N.Y. The Irish, who are 23-8 overall this season and finished 11-7 in BIG EAST regular-season play, earned a first-round bye and will face the winner of a first-round game between No. 11 seed Rutgers (14-15, 5-14) and No. 14 seed DePaul (11-20, 2-16) on Wednesday evening, March 13 at 9:00 pm on ESPN2.

Notre Dame finished in a tie for fifth place with Syracuse in the final regular-season standings as both teams finished with an identical 11-7 mark, but the Orange earned the No. 5 seed based on its 63-47 victory over the Irish during the regular season.

Georgetown (24-5, 14-4) will be the No. 1 seed in the tournament as the Hoyas earned share of the BIG EAST regular-season championship along with No. 2 seed Louisville (26-5, 14-4) and No. 3 seed Marquette (23-7, 14-4). The Hoyas earned the top seed based on head-to-head results against those two teams.

The 2013 Championship will be the 31st edition of the BIG EAST at Madison Square Garden, marking the longest-running conference tournament at one venue. It also will be the 34th tournament in league history.

Georgetown, Louisville and Marquette all earn double byes through the first two rounds of the tournament and will not see action until the quarterfinal round on Thursday, March 14.

Pittsburgh (24-7, 12-6) will be the No. 4 seed and also earned a bye into the quarterfinal round.
