CHICAGO, Ill. – The Irish men’s tennis team continued play at the Illinois/Olympia Fields Invitational on Saturday, participating in two sessions of singles play. The team earned seven singles wins, including two victories by sophomore Casey Watt (Gibsonia, PA/Pine-Richland).
Watt netted wins over two Miami Hurricanes, namely Carl Sundberg, 6-3, 6-4, and Christian Blocker, 6-3, 6-4.
Freshman Blas Moros (Boca Raton, FL/Pine Crest School) earned his second consecutive singles win to open his Irish career when he knocked-off Vahid Mirzadeh of Florida State in the morning session, 6-3, 6-3. Junior Stephen Havens (Cincinnati, OH/Hill Christian School) also earned a win in the morning session, downing Florida State’s Clint Bowles, 6-3, 6-1.
Juniors Tyler Davis (Nashville, TN/Father Ryan H.S.) and Daniel Stahl (Bethesda, MD/Walt Whitman H.S.) also had session I wins. Davis defeated Northwestern’s Joshua Graves, 7-5, 6-4 and Stahl downed Miami’s Christian Blocker, 6-0, 7-6 (5).
Junior Matt Johnson (Portage, MI/Portage Central H.S.) joined Watt as a winner in the afternoon session when he defeated Hector Nieto of Miami, 6-3, 6-4.
The Olympia Fields Invitational will conclude tomorrow, Sept. 20. Singles matches will begin at 9:00 a.m. Weather permitting, doubles action will get underway in the afternoon.
