Irish Earn Second at ITA Kickoff Weekend

ATHENS, Ga. —  Notre Dame Women’s Tennis concluded the ITA Kickoff Weekend, dropping a 5-2 decision to No. 3 Georgia in the championship match. Hosted by the University of Georgia, the Irish earned their place in Sunday’s championship match after defeating Furman on Saturday.

How It Happened

The Bulldogs struck first, earning the doubles point despite a strong effort from Zoe Taylor and Page Freeman. The sophomore/freshman duo led 3-2 over Georgia’s Elena Christofi and Marta Gonzalez before the match was left unfinished.

After the first set of singles, Freeman, Ally Bojczuk, and Zoe Spence each had 1-0 leads. Freeman continued her march, leading 4-3 midway through the first set, before pulling away to earn a 6-3 victory. Freeman opened the second set with a quick, convincing 4-0 lead, before earning the first Irish point with a 6-3, 6-1 win.

Cameron Corse and Bojczuk were each knotted at four midway through their first set. Corse and Georgia’s Ma were tied at six, before the Bulldog won the tiebreaker. Bojczuk earned the set victory, 6-4, and began the second set with a 4-2 lead over Georgia’s Gonzalez. Bojczuk ultimately earned the point for the Irish with a 6-4, 6-3 win.

Georgia earned four singles points to clinch the victory.

The Irish return home on Friday to host the Akron Zips at 5 p.m. ET at the Eck Tennis Pavilion. Live streaming and live scoring will be both be available for Friday’s match. Admission is free.
