EAST LANSING, Mich. – University of Notre Dame men’s tennis senior Michael Moore and freshman Nicolas Montoya each earned a pair of victories Thursday in the 2012 United States Tennis Association/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Midwest Region Championships Qualifying Draw at the Michigan State University Indoor Tennis Facility and Outdoor Tennis Courts. The pair moved within one victory of earning a bid into the tournament’s main singles draw.
Moore advanced in impressive fashion into the final 16 with a pair of 6-1, 6-1 decisions over Marquette’s Javier Varela and Youngstown State’s Rodrigo Campos. Montoya, meanwhile, outlasted Dawoud Kabli of Youngstown State (6-3, 6-4) before taking down James Stark of Marquette (6-3, 6-2) in the round of 32.
Two other Irish tennis players took the court in the qualifying draw. Senior Spencer Talmadge won his opening match of the draw over Detroit’s Alex Latosinsky (6-4, 6-4) before dropping a tough three-set decision to DePaul’s Adam Reinhart (6-7 (1), 6-3, 7-6 (5)) to see his singles tournament come to a close. Freshman Ken Sabacinski lost in the opening round, 6-4, 6-4, to Julian Childers of Illinois.
Montoya and Moore return to the courts Friday looking to clinch their spot in the main draw, with first serve scheduled for 8:00 a.m. (ET). Montoya faces Cleveland State’s Matt Ford, while Moore tangles with Max Phillips of Northern Illinois.
In addition to the conclusion of the singles qualifying bracket, first round play in the doubles main draw commences Friday at 11 a.m. Notre Dame sends five pairings to the court in search of a spot in the round of 32.
