Irish Duo Advances At 2010 Riviera/ITA All-American Championships

PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – The Irish women’s tennis tandem of Kristy Frilling (Sidney, Ohio) and Shannon Mathews (Birmingham, Mich.) advanced to the round of 16 at the 2010 Riviera/ITA All-American Championships on Thursday at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif. Frilling also advanced to the round of 16 in the main singles draw.

Mathews and Frilling advanced in doubles action after knocking off Yale’s duo of Vicky Brook and Lindsay Clark, 8-3. Brook and Clark advanced into the doubles main draw after navigating through the qualifying bracket. The Irish duo next face California’s pairing of Mari Andersson and Jana Jaricova, the top overall seed in the bracket.

In singles action, Frilling advanced into the round of 16 after recording a straight-sets win over Aeriel Ellis of Texas, 6-3, 7-5. She next meets Mallory Burdette of Stanford, who advanced into the main draw through the qualifying bracket and defeated Sonja Molnar of Iowa, 6-1, 4-6, 7-5.

Mathews’ match in the consolation bracket will not be played due her and Frilling’s doubles match taking place at the same scheduled time as the singles consolation matches on Thursday.

Friday’s schedule is tentatively set up to feature two rounds of the main doubles draw before starting two rounds of action in the main singles bracket.
