Irish Drop Decision at Wake

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.  —  Lauren Tarnoff collected a match-high six blocks, but Notre Dame fell in three sets to Wake Forest (22-25, 23-25, 21-25) on Friday night inside Reynolds Gymnasium.

Charley Niego led the Irish with 10 kills while Lindsey Miller added eight kills with a mark of .462 and Zoe Nunez dished out 27 assists. 

Defensively, Hattie Monson led Notre Dame with 12 digs and Caroline Meuth added five blocks of her own behind Tarnoff’s match-high six. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Set
The two sides opened play with a tight start to the first set before Wake Forest used a 4-0 run to go up 14-9. After the hosts earned a 20-13 lead, the Irish rallied with a 9-2 streak that included two kills and a block by Miller to even the frame at 22-22.

However, the Demon Deacons earned the next three points after the Irish tied it to take the first frame, 25-22.

Second Set
A pair of blocks by Tarnoff helped the Irish jump out to a 4-1 lead in set two before Wake Forest worked to tie the set at 11-all. The sides worked to a 16-16 deadlock before the Irish went on a 3-1 spurt, capped with an ace by Niego, to go up 19-17.

The Irish kept the two-point advantage at 23-21, but Wake Forest earned the final four points of the stanza to take the second set, 25-23.

Third Set
Wake Forest jumped out to an 8-1 lead to open the third frame and force an Irish timeout.

A trio of blocks by Tarnoff sparked an Irish 5-1 run that put Notre Dame back within three at 12-9 before an ace by Aubrey Hamilton finally evened the frame at 15-15.

Notre Dame used a 3-0 run to take a 21-20 lead, but the Demon Deacons converted the next five points to win the third set, 25-21.
