Syracuse, N.Y. – The Notre Dame women’s lacrosse team spent its third consecutive weekend in Western New York as the Irish visited Syracuse for their BIG EAST opener. The results weren’t as good as the first two trips as the Irish failed to score over the final 11:38 of the game on the way to a 16-13 loss to the Orange at the Carrier Dome.
Junior Caitlin McKinney (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) led Notre Dame with four goals and two assists on the afternoon. Jillian Byers (So., Northport, N.Y.) and Meghan Murphy (Sr., Centennial, Colo.) added three goals each. Kaki Orr (Sr., Darien, Conn.) and Jane Stoeckert (So., Mendham, N.J.) rounded out the scoring with two goals each.
Syracuse was led offensively by Ashley Pike who scored five times and Bridget Looney who added four in the Orange victory. Halley Quillinan added three goals while Megan Mosenson scored twice and Katie Rowan and Jill DePetris added one goal each in the win.
The victory improved the Orange to 4-3 overall and 1-1 in the BIG EAST while the Irish are now 5-2 for the season and 0-1 in conference play.
For the Irish the game was an uphill battle all afternoon as Syracuse scored the first four goals of the game, taking a 4-0 lead just 6:21 into the game. McKinney stopped that run with her first of the game at 9:24 only to see Quillinan answer 18 seconds later to make it 5-1.
Notre Dame got back in the game with a three-goal run as Murphy sandwiched a pair of goals around a Byers’ free-position shot to cut the lead to 5-4. Pike’s third goal of the half at 19:42 made it 6-4 in favor of Syracuse. Byers scored twice in a 40-second span to make it a 6-6 game. Quillinan closed out the half with her third goal and the Orange led 7-6 at the half.
The two schools traded the first seven goals of the second half with Orr’s goal with 13:07 left in the game tying the score at 10-10. The two teams continued to trade goals until the 18:22 mark of the second half before Orr’s third goal of the game on a free-position shot with 10:38 left in the game made it 13-12 on the season.
Looney tied the game at 18:40 to tie the score at 13-13. One minute later at 19:40, Rowan beat Irish goaltender Sam St. Lawrence to make it 14-13 and then Pike and Looney closed out the scoring for Syracuse and the 16-13 win.
The Irish were out shot on the afternoon by a 37-24 margin. Erin Goodman (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) made eight saves for Notre Dame while Amber Pardee-Hill had six stops in the Syracuse goal.
The loss ended Notre Dame’s four-game road swing with a 3-1 record. The Irish now return home to face Ohio State at Moose Krause Stadium on Wednesday, March 21 in a 4:00 p.m. game.
