Irish Drop 9-1 Decision To No. 1 Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Notre Dame men’s tennis team fell to first-ranked Virginia by a 9-1 final score on Sunday at the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar’s Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Va. The loss moves Notre Dame to a 1-1 record to start the dual season. The match followed a format of eight singles matches and four doubles matches.

The Cavaliers earned their first win at third doubles as Sanam Singh and Steven Eelkman Rooda edged junior Casey Watt (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) and freshman Greg Andrews (Richland, Mich./Gull Lake) with an 8-6 score.

At fourth doubles, Julen Uriguen and Justin Shane downed senior Daniel Stahl (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) and freshman Ryan Bandy (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier), 8-6.

At first doubles, No. 3 Drew Courtney and Michael Shabaz defeated No. 47 senior Stephen Havens (Cincinnati, Ohio/Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy) and senior captain Tyler Davis (Nashville, Tenn./Father Ryan) in a 9-8 (5) decision.

Sophomore Spencer Talmadge (Hillsborough, Calif./Junipero Serra) and junior Niall Fitzgerald (Wicklow, Ireland/Blackrock College) were defeated by No. 10 Alex Domijan and Jarmere Jenkins, 8-7 (4).

In singles action, No. 122 Davis started the season at the No. 7 spot for the Irish. The team captain earned a victory for Notre Dame, defeating Uriguen 7-6(3), 6-4. In the No. 8 position, Talmadge dropped a three-set match (6-4, 5-7, 6-1) to Philippe Oudshoorn.

71st-ranked Havens began the dual season at the No. 1 position. The senior was downed by No.27 Shabaz in a 6-3, 6-0 final score, while sophomore Sam Keeton (Kansas City, Mo./Pembroke Hill) fell to No.17 Courtney, 6-4, 6-3.

Stahl started the season at third singles where he dropped to No. 10 Singh a 6-3, 6-4 decision.

At the No. 2 position, Watt played a hard fought three-set match against the third-ranked Singh. Ultimately, the junior was defeated in a 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 score.

Andrews and Blas Moros (Boca Raton, Fla./Pine Crest) rounded out the Irish starting line up at the No. 4 position and No. 6 position, respectively. Andrews was defeated by Jenkins with a score of 5-7, 7-5, 6-2, while Moros was downed by Shane 7-5, 7-5.

The Irish return to action next Friday (Jan. 28) when they square off against Oklahoma at the National Team Indoor Qualifier. Illinois is set to play host to the event. The match is set to begin at 2:00 (CT). Be sure to check back to und.com for complete results.
