SOUTH BEND, Ind. — The Irish fell to Michigan State by a score of 4-3 on Tuesday evening at Alumni Stadium. The Spartans scored three times in the second half to secure the comeback victory.
Notre Dame’s goals came from Matthew Roou, Paddy Burns and Eno Nto.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Irish scored in the ninth minute to open the scoring and gain an early 1-0 lead. Jack Lynn played Roou in on goal, who proceeded to round the keeper and roll the ball into the net.
Ten minutes later the Spartans found the equalizer off a free kick to level the score at 1-1.
It was all Irish for the remainder of the first half, as Dawson McCartney found an on-running Burns in space, who banged a shot off the far post and in to put Notre Dame back in front at 2-1 in the 22nd minute. The Irish then doubled their lead in the 32nd minute off the left foot of Nto. The freshman curled his effort into the roof to extend the lead to 3-1.
The Spartans came out of the halftime break and scored three times in the first 30 minutes of action to take its first lead of the night at 4-3. The Irish were unable to tie the game, resulting in the 4-3 defeat.

“Obviously hugely disappointed with how the game ended up. Credit to Michigan State, they kept going which we knew they would. For playing a great first half, the second half we shot ourselves in the foot a few times and everytime we did Michigan State seemed to punish us. But as tough as it is I know we will learn from it and be stronger for the experience.”
NOTES
- Roou has now scored in each of his last two games and three goals in the first five games of his college career.
- Burns scored the first goal of his career on Tuesday evening.
- With a goal, Nto now has two goals in the first five matches of his career.
- Freshman Kyle Genenbacher made the first start of his career.
