Irish Drop 4-3 Decision At Alaska Fairbanks

Nov. 30, 2002

Box Score

Fairbanks, Alaska – Friday nights are proving to be bad nights for the Notre Dame hockey team. Going into Friday night’s game with the Alaska Fairbanks Nanooks, the Irish had won just once on a Friday night going 1-3-2 in their first six Friday night contests.

Thanks to Alaska Fairbanks sophomore Aaron Voros, that record falls to 1-4-2. Playing in his first game since Nov. 2, Voros ripped a wrist shot past Irish goaltender Morgan Cey at 8:58 of the third period to snap a 3-3 tie and give the Nanooks a 4-3 win over the Irish at the Carlson Center.

Voros’ goal also wiped out a three-goal Notre Dame rally on goals by Matt Amado, Cory McLean and Rob Globke that helped the Irish wipe out a 3-0 Alaska Fairbanks lead to tie the game just 2:58 into the third period.

The loss drops the Irish to 5-5-2 overall and 4-5-0 in the CCHA. Alaska Fairbanks is now 4-7-2 overall and 3-6-2 in league play. The win moves the Nanooks into a tie for sixth place in the league with Notre Dame as each team now has eight points in league play.

Notre Dame was outshot in the game by a 39-20 margin as UAF rang up 20 shots in the second period on Cey.

The first period featured plenty of end-to-end action before the Nanooks broke through on Irish Cey at 18:42 of the opening period.

Defenseman David Keough carried the puck into the Irish zone and left it for right wing Kelly Czuy. The freshman ripped a shot from the right faceoff dot that Cey was able to get a glove on, but the puck trickled through the crease and into the open net for Czuy’s fourth of the season and a 1-0 Alaska Fairbanks lead.

It looked like the Irish would get out of the first period down 1-0 before a late turnover proved costly. Left wing Ryan Campbell picked off a clearing attempt and fired it past Cey with six-tenths of a second left in the period for his fourth goal of the year and a 2-0 Nanook lead.

Alaska Fairbanks took it to the Irish in the second period, but Cey stopped 19 of 20 shots to keep the Irish in the game.

The lone Nanook goal of the period came off the stick of Tom Herman when he jammed a rebound past Cey at 9:18 for a 3-0 lead. Cey made the initial save on Jared Sylvestre’s shot but the rebound came right to Herman who was camped on the left post.

The Irish finally got their offense untracked at 15:07 of the third period when freshman Matt Amado scored his first collegiate goal. Connor Dunlop and Rob Globke double-teamed a Nanook defenseman in the left wing corner with Dunlop breaking out with the puck. He found Amado alone in front and he snapped a wrister past Lance Mayes to cut the lead to 3-1.

Notre Dame tied the game with a pair of goals in the first three minutes of the third stanza.

The Irish power play cut the lead to 3-2 just 1:16 into the period. Globke kept the puck alive along the left wing boards and moved it back to Neil Komadoski at the left point. The junior defenseman’s shot was deflected in front by McLean. Mayes made the save but McLean fired the rebound between his pads for his fourth of the season and the momentum had swung to the Irish.

Less than two minutes later, the game was tied as Globke notched his 10th of the season at 2:58 off a faceoff to the right of the Alaska Fairbanks goal.

Dunlop won the draw back to Globke in the slot. The junior right wing got around a UAF defenseman then made a great move on Mayes and flipped the puck under the cross bar to tie the game.

The game stayed tied until the 8:58 mark of the period when Cory Rask found Voros at the top of the right wing circle. Voros wasted little time as he whipped a shot past Cey for his second goal of the year.

Cey finished the game with 35 saves on the night while Mayes made 17 to pick up the win.

The two teams will meet again on Saturday night in Fairbanks. Game time is 7:05 p.m. (11:05 p.m. in South Bend) at the Carlson Center.
