Irish Downed By Louisville

LOUISVILLE, Ky. —  The Notre Dame volleyball team was downed in three sets (21-25,18-25, 14-25) by Louisville on Friday night at L&N Federal Credit Union Arena.

Charley Niego and Caroline Meuth tied for a team-high eight kills while Zoe Nunez earned 28 assists with a team-high six digs.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Set
The teams opened play in a 7-7 tie before back-to-back Louisville points put the hosts up 9-7. The Irish got within one on two occasions before the Cardinals opened up an 18-14 advantage. After Louisville extended its lead to 22-16, a 3-0 Irish run pulled Notre Dame within three and forced a Cardinals timeout. However, Louisville held on to take the first set, 25-21, and earn a 1-0 lead in the match. 

Second Set
The second stanza began in a 6-6 deadlock before the sides traded 3-1 spurts en route to a 10-all tie. The Cardinals earned three straight points to grab a 13-11 advantage. A pair of kills by Meuth helped the Irish get within one at 16-15, but Louisville responded with two straight points to go up 18-15. The Cardinals maintained control from there to earn a 25-18 set win and a 2-0 lead.

Third Set
The Cardinals jumped out to an 8-2 advantage in the third frame to force an Irish timeout. After Louisville earned a 13-4 lead, the Irish rattled off five straight points to get within three at 13-9. Another 3-0 Irish run, which included kills by Sydney Bent and Niego, cut Louisville’s lead to 14-12. Louisville answered with an 11-2 streak and clinched the sweep with a 25-14 win in the third set.

UP NEXT
Notre Dame (18-8, 11-5 ACC) stays on the road to take on Georgia Tech this Sunday, November 24th at 1 p.m. in Atlanta. The match is set to be streamed live via ACC Network Extra.
