Irish Doubles Advance at Riviera/ITA All-American Championships

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Notre Dame women’s tennis team competed at the both the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships and the Wildcat Fall Invitational Saturday.

Sophomore Kristy Frilling and senior Kali Krisik upset California’s second-ranked and top-seed Mari Andersson and Jana Juricova, 9-8 (7), in the consolation bracket at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championship. The 15th-ranked Irish duo will take on Clemson’s No. 14 Josipa Bek and Ina Hadziselmovic Sunday at 9 a.m. (PT).

Singles action got underway Saturday at the Wildcat Fall Invitational hosted by Northwestern.

In Flight A action, sophomore Kristen Rafael dropped her first-round match to South Carolina’s Anya Morgina, 6-1, 0-6, 6-3, before battling Akron’s Angelica Jogasuria to three sets in the consolation bracket. Rafael took the first set 6-2, before Jogasuria won the second, 6-2. Rafael fought to a tiebreaker in the third set, eventually losing 6-7. Rafael will take on Oklahoma’s Teona Tsertsvadze Sunday.

In Flight B, senior Cosmina Ciobanu fell behind, 6-4, to South Carolina’s Josefin Andersson before the match was retired. Freshman Christine McGaffigan also saw her Flight A match retired at 0-1 to South Carolina’s Ana Marija Zubori.
