Irish Dominate Singles Play At Midwest Blast

URBANA, Ill. – The University of Notre Dame women’s tennis team wrapped up another successful day Saturday at the Illinois Midwest Blast, recording five of six singles wins over Purdue in the hidden dual-style event at the Atkins Tennis Center at the University of Illinois.

The Irish nearly swept the Boilermakers, with the only loss coming in three sets at the No. 2 slot as Allison Miller fell to Andjela Djokovic, 7-6(6), 4-6, 6-3.

The rest of the Irish recorded straight-set victories. No. 93 senior Quinn Gleason defeated Kristina Kapitany 6-2, 6-2 on Court 1 and junior Mary Closs upended Deborah Suarez 6-1, 6-2 on Court 3. Senior Julie Vrabel beat Nicole Robinson 7-5, 6-4 at the No. 4 spot; sophomore Brooke Broda dispatched Claudia Escribens 7-6(2), 7-5; and freshman Rachel Chong cruised past Marta Ruedas-Borgos 6-1, 6-1.

In doubles play, host Illinois swept the Irish in three matches.

Action will conclude Sunday as the Irish will face Missouri in singles at 9 a.m. ET.
