Irish Dominate in 27-2 Win Over Detroit Mercy

SOUTH BEND, IN. – The #18 Fighting Irish hosted Detroit Mercy on Tuesday afternoon. The Irish had a commanding presence when they took a 27-2 win over the Titans.

The Notre Dame offense was powered by the 16 different goal scorers and six different Irish who dished out assists.

Madison Ahern led the offense with four goals and Maddie Howe led the team in assists with four.

Bridget Deehan registered one save before Lilly Callahan entered the game to tally six saves. Callahan established a new career-high in saves. Isabel Pithie also entered the game tallying one save.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Irish put up 12 goals just in the first quarter. The first Irish goal came within the first two minutes of play. Madison Ahern made it her 35th goal of the season. A minute later Mary Kelly Doherty would score for the Irish and a minute after that, Madison Mote would continue to add to the tally. The first five minutes of play had the Irish up 4-0 with the fourth Irish goal coming from Ahern. 

Kasey Choma converted on a free position attempt with ten minutes remaining in the first quarter for a five goal advantage. Detroit Mercy would respond at the eight minute mark with a goal from Elise Harder making it 6-1. Kelly Denes, Ahern, Choma, and Jackie Wolak would all score late in the quarter to make the Irish advantage 10-1. Jane McAvoy and Maddie Howe wrapped up the scoring to end the quarter with a 12-1 lead.

The second quarter was dominated by the Irish scoring all of the goals of the quarter. Ahern, Wolak, Choma, Mote, Dorney, and Kristynik all added to the Irish lead throughout the quarter. At the end of the quarter, Howe tallied four assists to lead the Irish. Going into halftime the Irish had a 18-1 lead. 

Coming out of halftime, Ciara Mazzone scored, making her first collegiate career goal to give the Irish a 19-1 advantage. Kristynik would score after a save from Callahan and a successful clear to make it twenty goals for the Irish. Cailin Field, Kristen Shanahan, and Mollie Carr entered the game and immediately added to the Irish goal tally for a 23-1 advantage. The fourth quarter gave Mazzone her second goal of the season and career with other goals coming from Alison Harbaugh, Abby Maichin and Mollie Carr for an eventual 27-2 win over the Titans.

The Irish travel to Boston College to take on the Eagles on Saturday April 9 at 2:00 pm. There will be live stats available and the game will be streamed live on the ACCN Extra.
