Irish Divers Complete Day Two At ACC Championships

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The University of Notre Dame men’s diving team officially opened Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Championship competition Thursday at the Greensboro Aquatic Center. The Irish divers scored 32 points to tie Pittsburgh for seventh place in the overall men’s championship scoring tally on day one, and finished Friday’s second competitive day in sixth place with 33 total points.

Freshman Joe Coumos paced Notre Dame with 345.50 points in the preliminary round off the 3-meter board Thursday, narrowly missing the finals of the event. Coumos’ cumulative diving score of 16 points earned led all Irish competitors. Coumos added an 18th place result off the 1-meter board on Friday, totaling 321.90 points.

Junior Michael Kreft joined Coumos in the top 15 of team scoring in the 3-meter dive with total score 331.10 points, scoring 12 points. Kreft led all Irish competitors off the 1-meter board, scoring 334.55 points to finish 13th overall.

Junior Nick Nemetz added three event points with a 22nd place finish (296.60) in the 3-meter dive, before flipping his fortune in Friday’s 1-meter event. Nemetz totaled 325.20 points off the 1-meter board to place 17th overall.

Junior Ted Wagner rounded out the Notre Dame finishers in Thursday’s 3-meter dive, claiming 24th place with a final score of 290.05 points. Wagner worked his way up the rankings in the 1-meter event, scoring 305.00 points to finish in 22nd place overall.

The third and final day of the 2014 ACC Men’s Diving Championship is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. (ET) Saturday at the Greensboro Aquatic Center, with participants competing in the platform diving event.
