Nov. 13, 2009

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Notre Dame men’s and women’s cross country teams are set to compete Saturday at the Great Lakes Regional meet held at the Indiana University Championship Cross Country Course in Bloomington, Ind.

The men’s 10,000-meter race begins at noon (EST), followed by the women’s 6,000-meter event at 1:15 p.m.

The Irish are coming off sixth-place finishes at the BIG EAST Championships on Oct. 31.

Last season, both the men’s and women’s squads finished fourth at the regional meet as Patrick Smyth won his second-consecutive Great Lakes title. Sophomore Joe Miller earned all-region honors with a 20th-place finish, while junior Dan Jackson was 28th.

On the women’s side, senior Lindsey Ferguson and junior Marissa Treece garnered all-region recognition, finishing 10th and 14th, respectively.

The top two teams at the regional meets automatically qualify for the NCAA Championships. Thirteen at-large bids will also be awarded. The top-four individual regional finishers, whose teams did not qualify for the national meet, will also be selected to compete in the NCAA Championships.

Complete results from the Great Lakes Regional will be available at www.und.com following the completion of both races.
