Irish Continue Season At Northwestern Duals

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The top-ranked Notre Dame men’s and women’s fencing teams will travel to Evanston, Ill., on Saturday to participate in the Northwestern University Duals. The event marks Notre Dame’s fourth competition of the season.

The day’s action sees the Irish women square off in duals against Fairleigh Dickenson, North Carolina, UC San Diego, California Institute of Technology, Princeton, Temple and Stanford. For the men’s team, Saturday will involve matches versus Princeton, Stanford, California Institute of Technology, UC San Diego and North Carolina.

Last weekend, the Irish men’s and women’s fencing squads posted identical 8-0 records at the Notre Dame Duals and the men marked the return of Ted Hodges to the lineup after a successful recovery from a heart transplant.

Three events into the 2011 season, 11 Irish fencers have already broken the 20-win plateau. On the men’s side, in epee James Kaull has posted a 29-9 record and Jacob Osborne sits at 20-8, foilist Nicholas Crebs has an impressive 20-1 mark and in sabre, Avery Zuck boasts a 22-2 record on the year.

The Fighting Irish women’s team has been led by epeeists Courtney Hurley and Ewa Nelip, foilists Hayley Reese and Grace Hartman as well as by sabreists Sarah Borrmann, Eileen Hassett and Abigail Nichols. Hurley has a 34-4 record while Nelip has a 32-7 mark. Hartman leads the foilists with a mark of 22-6 with Reese just behind her at 21-7. The sabreists are led by Hassett (26-4), closely followed by Nichols (24-10) and Borrmann (20-13).
