July 3, 2007

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Once the final 2007 rankings were released, the Notre Dame men’s lacrosse team found itself among the top teams in the nation, yet again. The Fighting Irish were ranked in the top 11 of the Nike/Inside Lacrosse, United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) and LaxPower polls.

Notre Dame concluded the 2007 campaign with an 11-4 record including a perfect 5-0 mark in the Great Western Lacrosse League (GWLL) en route to winning its 10th GWLL title. The Irish garnered a No. 3 ranking in the final LaxPower computer poll. Notre Dame was No. 9 in the last Nike/Inside Lacrosse media poll and No. 11 in the final USILA rankings.

An 11-10 overtime loss to eventual national champion Johns Hopkins ended the Irish’s 2007 campaign on May 13.

This marked the fifth straight year that the Fighting Irish have finished a season ranked among the top 20 teams nationally. Notre Dame concluded last season ranked 17th in the final USILA poll.

The postseason accolades were abundant for the Fighting Irish as they matched a program record by producing five USILA All-America honorees. Brian Hubschmann (Sr./M/Short Hills, N.J.), Joey Kemp (Jr./G/Potomac, Md.), Sean Dougherty (Jr./D/Malvern, Pa.), Michael Podgajny (Jr./M/Ridley Park, Pa.) and Will Yeatman (Fr./A/San Diego, Calif.) were honorable mention All-America selections.

Notre Dame also swept the major awards from the GWLL. Kemp was named the GWLL Player of the Year, while Yeatman was tabbed as the Newcomer of the Year. Yeatman also was named the LaxPower national Rookie of the Year. Kevin Corrigan was selected as the GWLL Coach of the Year for the fourth time. In all, the Irish had eight players earn all-conference honors. Kemp, Yeatman, Dougherty and Ryan Hoff (So./A/Baldwin, Md.) were first-team selections, while Hubschmann, Podgajny, Lucius Polk (Sr./M/Washington, D.C.) and Ross Zimmerman (Jr./D/Utica, Mich.) were named to the second team.
