KANNAPOLIS, N.C. – The University of Notre Dame men’s golf team carded an opening day score of 596 (297-299) Saturday to claim 15th place at the Irish Creek Collegiate at The Club at Irish Creek.
Junior Andrew Lane led all Irish players with a two-round total of 148 (74-74) to tie for 41st place after day one. Lane made six birdies in his opening 36 holes to pace the Notre Dame lineup at six-over par.
Senior Paul McNamara III opened the event with a two-over par 73 before closing with a five-over 76 for a two round total of 149 (tie for 47th place).
Freshman Cory Sciupider finished his second round with a two-over 73 of his own to tie for 51st place after a 150 (77-73). Sciupider birdied two of his final four holes in round two.
Junior Niall Platt and sophomore Patrick Grahek carded matching rounds of 75-76-151 to claim a share of 55th place after the opening 36 holes. Platt led all Notre Dame players with seven birdies.
North Carolina took a four-stroke overnight lead after posting a team score of 282-285-567 (-1). Davidson fired a 282 during its second 18 to take runner-up honors at 571 (289-282). North Carolina State (292-280-572) and UNC Wilmington (289-283-572) tied for third place, while Kennesaw State carded a 578 (288-290) to round out the top five.
Round three of the Irish Creek Collegiate is scheduled for an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start Sunday.
