Johnathan Shawel earned his second straight bid to the NCAA Outdoor Championships after his fourth-place showing Saturday at the East Prelims.

Irish Compete on Day One at Arizona State and Stanford

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Irish track and field squads started the outdoor season strong Friday while competing on the first day of events at the Arizona State and Stanford invitationals.

Notre Dame saw four top-five finishes at the Stanford meet, while John Belcher qualified for the finals of the men’s hammer throw at the Arizona State Invitational.

The Irish continue competition at both meets Saturday.

Arizona State Invitational Results

Men’s Hammer: John Belcher advanced to the finals, finishing 10th with a mark of 56.88m (186-07). The Sun Devils’ Jason Lewis was the top thrower at 66.15m (217-00). Greg Davis finished 17th in the preliminaries at 51.60m (169-03), Andrew Hills was 22nd with a toss of 49.31m (161-09) ad Denes Veres finished 25th at 48.53m (159-03).

Stanford Invitational Results

Men’s 1500m Section 2: Johnathan Shawel finished third with a time of 3:47.54, while Daniel Clark was eighth in 3:50.84. Princeton’s Trevor Van Ackeren ran the top time of 3:46.86.

Men’s 1500m Section 3: Jeremy Rae finished fourth in 3:47.85, followed by Jordan Carlson in fifth at 3:48.25. J.P. Mallette clocked in at 3:51.07 to finish eighth. Oklahoma State’s Johnathan Stublaski won the heat in 3:46.56.

Men’s 1500m Section 5: Spencer Carter finished 10th in 3:57.11. Princeton’s Tony Salvatore was first in 3:51.27.

Men’s 3000m Steeplechase Section 2: Joe Miller finished 14th in 9:20.56, just ahead of Kelly Lynch in 16th at 9:24.24. Arizona’s Brian MacArthur was the top runner in 8:58.54

Men’s 10,000m Section 2: Dan Jackson finished 10th in 29:29.89 as Oklahoma’s Jeremy Sudbury was first at 29:18.64.

Women’s 1500m Section 3: Marissa Treece clocked in at 4:31.46 to finish seventh. Utah’s Alyssa Abbott was first at 4:27.62.

Women’s 1500m Section 4: Rebecca Tracy finished third in 4:26.18 just behind Seattle Pacific’s Jane Larson in first at 4:23.05 and SMU’s Mary Alenbratt in second at 4:25.90.

Women’s 1500m Section 7: Molly Hirt finished 13th with a time of 4:51.97. Nebraska’s Erica Hamik and Brooke Dinsdale were the top two finishers, clocking in at 4:33.10 and 4:33.50, respectively.

Women’s 5000m Section 1: Lindsey Ferguson finished 14th in 16:52.22 as Seattle Pacific’s Jessica Pixler won the heat in 15:44.07.

Women’s 10,000m Section 2: Erica Watson finished 16th with a time of 35:21.39, while Jessica Rydberg finished 23thrd in 35:37.38. Iowa State’s Semehar Tesfaye clocked in at 34:16.65 to win the heat.
