Irish come up short against Louisville

While Notre Dame posted nine individual wins on Friday, the Irish fell to 10th-ranked Louisville in both the men’s and women’s meets to kick off the 2022-23 home slate. The men’s final score was 172-128, while the women were topped 191-109.

For the second consecutive meet, both Madelyn Christman and Tommy Janton earned backstroke victories. This time around, Christman took the 100 (54.40) while Janton earned the gold in the 200 (1:45.33). Both backstrokers are swimmers to watch this season, per Peterson Family Head Swimming Coach Chris Lindauer.

Senior Jack Hoagland won both the 500 (4:23.31) and 1,000 (9:04.28) freestyle events, bringing his individual win total this season to five. He continues to be one of the most dominant swimmers in the ACC. Two Irish seniors won both 200 butterfly events as well, as Coleen Gillilan went (1:59.12) and Cason Wilburn posted a time of (1:47.37).

Graduate transfer and former Louisville standout Colton Paulson got a shot as his former team for the first time in a gold cap, and he was narrowly out-touched in the 100 freestyle (44.03). He also notched a second-place finish in the 200 freestyle (1:36.94). Paulson followed Lindauer from Louisville to Notre Dame to close out his collegiate career.

Head diving coach Mark Bradshaw’s team was responsible for three of the nine individual victories on Friday. Graduate transfer Allie Klein and freshman Daniel Knapp won the 3-meter event, while sophomore and 2022 NCAA qualifier Calie Brady topped the standings in the 1-meter.

The swimming and diving teams will split for their final competition ahead of Thanksgiving Break. The swimmers will head to the Ohio State Invitational in Columbus, while the divers will make the trip to Austin for the Texas Diving Invitational. Both meets will be Nov. 17-19.
