Irish Close Tom Fallon Invitational with Eight More Singles Wins

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Notre Dame men’s tennis team posted an 7-6 record in singles play Sunday on final day of the Tom Fallon Invitational to run their singles mark to 26-14 over the three day tournament. The Irish also posted a 3-2 mark in doubles.

Irish junior Brett Helgeson once again led the Irish with a dominant 6-0, 6-1 victory over Michigan’s George Navas. Helgeson, who was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player, won all four of his tournament singles matches to push his record to 8-0 this fall.

Notre Dame’s freshmen turned in strong performances all weekend, including four victories Sunday. Dan Stahl and Tyler Davis joined Helgeson on the All-Tournament team. Both rookies recorded victories over Michigan Wolverines Sunday. Stahl was victorious over Chris Madden in a three set marathon 7-5, 4-6, 1-0 (10-6) and Davis prevailed over Scott Bruckmann 6-3, 7-6 (8-6).

The other two freshman victories came at the expense of the Iowa Hawkeyes. David Anderson triumphed over Reinoud Hall 6-3, 6-0, while fellow rookie Matt Johnson defeated the Hawkeyesâ?TM Tommy McGeorge 6-2, 6-3.

Despite a loss Sunday, Steven Havens was also named to the all tournament team. Notre Dame placed four players on the nine player All-Tournament team, the most of any school.

Veterans’ Patrick Callaghan and Takashi Yoshii also posted singles wins for Notre Dame Sunday.

Callaghan defeated Austin Kauss of Iowa 6-3, 6-4 and Yoshii was a 6-4, 6-4 victor over Michael Calderone of Western Michigan.

Notre Dame will head to Tulsa, OK to compete in the ITA All-American Championships beginning Thursday.
