Irish Close Sunday Doubleheader with Victory

NOTRE DAME, In. —  The Notre Dame Women’s Tennis team continued its four-match homestand with a victory over Butler on Sunday at the Eck Tennis Pavilion. The Irish began the Sunday doubleheader with a hard-fought 4-3 loss to Kentucky before rallying to defeat the Bulldogs, 4-0.

How It Happened

After falling behind 1-0 in doubles play, the duo of Zoe Spence and Zoe Taylor earned a convincing 6-2 victory over Kentucky’s Carlota Molina and Diana Tkachenko. With the doubles point on the line, Cameron Corse and Page Freeman came from behind to tie the set at five apiece. After falling behind, 6-5, the Irish and Wildcats traded serves before Kentucky eventually clinched the match and the doubles point.

In singles play, the Irish looked to rally behind consecutive victories from Maeve Koscielski, Cameron Corse, and Zoe Spence to start the Irish scoring. Corse’s defeat took down the No. 59-ranked student-athlete in the country in Lesedi Jacobs. Ally Bojczuk and Page Freeman each took the Wildcats to three sets before falling in the third. After going down 5-2 in the third set, Freeman rallied with three break points against her. Freeman forced the tiebreaker, ultimately falling to Girbau.

In the afternoon session, the Irish made quick work of the Bulldogs, quickly taking the doubles point with victories in all three matches. Corse & Freeman and Bojczuk & Lilien each won, 6-0, while Spence & Taylor earned a 6-1 victory.

In doubles play, Waldram, Freeman, and Lilien each earned quick victories in their singles match to clinch the competition and make it 4-0 in favor of the Irish.
