Irish Close Out Regular Season With 176-123 Win Over Toledo

Toledo, Ohio – The No. 19 University of Notre Dame women’s swimming and diving team closed out the regular season Saturday with a 176-123 dual meet win over the University of Toledo at the UT Student Recreation Center Pool.

The Irish won 12 of the 16 events to end the dual meet season at 5-4. Earning multiple individual wins on the day for the Irish were Jaime Malandra (1,000 Free, 500 Free), Emma Reaney (200 Free, 200 Breast) and Kelly Ryan (50 Free, 200 Back). Divers Lindsey Streepey (3-Meter Dive) and Allison Casaerto (1-Meter Dive) and swimmers Genevieve Bradford (100 Breast), Suzanne Bessire (200 IM) and Kim Holden (100 Back) also earned individual wins. Ryan, Reaney, Holden and Bessire also composed the winning 400 medley relay team.

Ryan set a new pool mark with her 100 back time in the 400 medley relay.

The Irish will continue to train for the next two-plus weeks before heading to Indianapolis, Ind., for the 2013 BIG EAST Swimming and Diving Championships (Feb. 27-March 2).

Event-By-Event Results

400 Medley Relay: The Irish opened the meet in style as they won the 400 medley relay by over four seconds … the team of Kelly Ryan, Emma Reaney, Kim Holden and Suzanne Bessire finished in 3:46.54, 4.28 seconds faster than the A team from Toledo … Ryan set the table by lowering the pool record in the 100 back when she went 55.95 as the leadoff leg of the relay.

1,000 Free: Jaime Malandra claimed victory in the 1,000 free by taking the event in just over five seconds … her time of 10:15.87 bested Toledo’s Rachel Johnson’s time of 10:20.96.

200 Free: Reaney picked up her second win of the day (400 medley relay) with a victory in the 200 free (1:50.95) … the sophomore topped Toledo’s Carly Harter (1:51.35) by .40 seconds.

100 Back: Holden continued her strong effort in the 100 back with a dominating victory by over a second … the senior touched the pad in 56.18, 1.41 faster than Maria Bargardi (57.59).

100 Breast: Genevieve Bradford won the 100 breast in 1:05.29, which was .55 better than Toledo’s Meredith Gibbon.

200 Fly: The Rocket’s Beth Rogers took the 200 fly by just .47 seconds over Notre Dame’s Bridget Casey (2:01.99).

50 Free: Ryan won her second event of the evening (400 medley relay) as she took the 50 free in 24.25 … the junior won the event by .28 seconds.

3-Meter Dive: Lindsey Streepey won the 3-meter dive by over 18 points … the freshman totaled 309.82 points to beat Toledo’s Nikki Schropp (291.15) … Jenny Chiang took third with 291.00 points … she was followed by Emma Gaboury (283.28), Allison Casareto (272.63) and Kimmie Lisiak (263.25).

100 Free: Harter claimed the 100 free in 52.44 to best Notre Dame’s Suzanne Bessire (52.83) by .39 seconds … junior Mikelle Masciantonio took third in 53.40.

200 Back: Ryan won her second individual and third overall event of the evening with a victory in the 200 back … the Hinsdale, Ill., native touched the pad in 2:01.33, over two seconds faster than Toledo’s Bargardi (2:03.50).

200 Breast: Reaney won her second individual event of the afternoon with a first place scroll in the 200 breast … the Lawrence, Kan., product took the event by an impressive 3.39 seconds … Reaney finished in 2:17.26, which topped Notre Dame’s Genevieve Bradford (2:20.65).

500 Free: Malandra swept the long swims with a victory in the 500 free … the Allentown, Pa., native took the event in 5:02.54, just .75 seconds faster than Casey (5:03.29).

100 Fly: The Rockets took the top two spots in the 100 fly as McKenzie Bagan won in 55.93 … she topped her teammate Rogers by just .06 seconds … Holden took third in 56.14.

1-Meter Dive: The Irish took the top four spots in the 1-meter dive … Casareto took the title with 321.38 points … Chiang wasn’t far behind with 320.40 points … Lisiak took third with 272.93 points and Streepey placed fourth with 264.22 points.

200 IM: Bessire won the final individual event of the day with a victory in the 200 IM … she topped Irish teammate Genevieve Bradford by just .21 seconds, 2:06.42 – 2:06.63.

200 Free Relay: Toledo closed out the dual meet with a win in the 200 free relay … the Rockets finished in 1:35.51, with the Irish taking second in 1:35.74 … the Notre Dame was composed of Christen McDonough, Ryan, Holden and Reaney.
