Irish Close Out Fall Season At Tribe Invitational

Nov. 8, 2012

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The University of Notre Dame men’s tennis team closes out its 2012 fall season this weekend as the Irish head to Williamsburg, Va., for the three-day Tribe Invitational.

The Irish will be joined by the host William & Mary Tribe, Harvard and Old Dominion. The weekend will be jam-packed with six singles flights and three doubles flights, with all three days starting at 9 a.m. (ET). Each flight will be a round-robin format.

Notre Dame has had three weeks away from competition following the USTA/ITA Midwest Regional Championships in East Lansing, Mich., where the Irish had two players reach the second round of the singles draw, while the doubles duo of Greg Andrews and Spencer Talmadge advanced to the finals of the doubles draw, beating five teams on their way to the runner-up spot.

For his efforts during the month of October, Andrews was named the BIG EAST’s Men’s Tennis Player of the Month. The reigning BIG EAST Player of the Year went 3-2 in singles and 8-1 in doubles during the month and is off to an impressive start to his 2012-13 year. Ranked 24th to begin the season, Andrews was named MVP of the OFCC Invitational in September and has competed at the ITA Men’s All-America Championships in addition to the USTA/ITA Midwest Regional Championships. He is 6-3 in singles and 9-3 in doubles heading into the weekend.

Also turning in strong falls are seniors Blas Moros (7-0 singles) and Spencer Talmadge (6-2 in singles), sophomore Wyatt McCoy (7-3 singles) and freshman Nicolas Montoya (9-3 in singles).

Among the talented competitors in Williamsburg will be the Tribe’s Jamie Whiteford, who entered the fall ranked No. 43, and Harvard’s Denis Nguyen, who began the campaign ranked No. 104.

Harvard ended the 2011-12 season ranked No. 24, five spots ahead of the Irish (No. 29).
