Irish Claim BIG EAST Boat Of The Week Honors

April 19, 2012

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The University of Notre Dame women’s rowing team added yet another accolade to its list of accomplishments on the season when the varsity four boat captured BIG EAST Boat of the Week distinction after its performance at the Virginia Invite in Charlottesville, Va.

The four boat, captained by coxswain Danni Schneider and rowers Joanna Poinsatte, Kelsey Sekanick, Stella Willoughby and Katie Suyo, claimed two race victories last week en route to helping the Irish to a great team finish at the Invite.

In the morning race on Saturday, the varsity four boat went up against the 18th-ranked Clemson Tigers and dominated the race, stopping the clock at 7:31.3, a full 11 seconds before the Tigers.

The boat took to the water again later on Saturday against the top-ranked Virginia Cavaliers and the Northeastern Huskies. The race would be one of the most exciting races of the Invite as both the Irish and the Cavaliers were trying to keep perfect meet records intact. The Irish would end up crossing the finish line just over six seconds behind the Cavaliers but a full 31 seconds ahead of the Huskies to finish second in the race.

The final race for the varsity four boat came on Sunday when the Irish rowers jumped back in the water for a showdown against Penn and San Diego. The Irish rowed a solid race, crossing the finish line first with a time of 7:34.1.

The Irish next head to Redwood Shores, Calif., as they take on Stanford and USC Saturday. Check back with UND.com for all your University of Notre Dame women’s rowing news and information and follow @NDsidBrent for up-to-date race information during the remaining events of the year.
