NEW LONDON, N.C. – For the University of Notre Dame men’s golf team, the year 2018 signaled a new era and persona, and that very attitude was on display at the ACC Championships this weekend.
Though, the Irish may have slipped to sixth place on the final day, it still marked the program’s best showing at the ACC Championships. Not only that, the Irish shattered their previous best score at the league championships by 27 strokes, finishing at 19-under par.
The 19-under par marks the second lowest team score in program history, second to only the 2005-06 squad’s 22-under par at the Big East Championship and the 22-under par at the Quail Valley Intercollegiate back in October.
“We were well prepared after a hard-fought spring,” Notre Dame head coach John Handrigan said. “This week was nothing new for our boys, we went out there with the right mentality and fought for every inch. Playing in the final group at the ACC championship with the two top ranked teams in the conference was a great experience and we handled it well by executing our game plan under pressure.”
FINAL ROUND
The final top-15 of the leaderboard featured the two Davis’ of the Fighting Irish. Davis Lamb climbed four spots on Sunday to tie for eighth place at nine-under par, as the latter tied for the third best score on the team all season. Lamb also achieved his second straight top-10 finish and third on the year.
The sophomore shot a 68 (-4) this afternoon, matching his low on the year. Lamb shot three-under on the back-nine and tallied six more birdies on the day.
Davis Chatfield produced another stellar round for Notre Dame with a 70 (-2) on Sunday. The freshman tied for 12th place at eight-under par in his first ACC Championships.
John Felitto recorded a four-under par on the front-nine, which included an eagle on the par-5 fourth. However, the back-nine proved troublesome for Felitto as the sophomore finished with a 71 (-1). As a result, Felitto tied for 19th in the tournament at six-under par.
Finally, Miguel Delgado rounded out the team scoring with a 77 (+5). Delgado finished in a tie for 46th at four-over par.
