Irish Break Two School Records at Day Four of ACC Championships

Friday Results

ATLANTA, Ga. — Heading down the home stretch of the 2022 ACC Championships, the Notre Dame swimming and diving teams had their best performance of the championships on Friday from McAuley Aquatic Pavilion in Atlanta. The Irish broke two school records and claimed a silver medal in the second to last day of the competition. The women sit in seventh place with 459 points and the men are in ninth with 326.

The first school record to fall on the night came in the 100 breaststroke finals. Josh Bottelberghe had the second-fastest time in the prelims to earn him a spot in the A Final. He had the best swim of the weekend in the finals to place second overall with a time of 51.61. The time broke his previous school record that he set earlier this season at the Ohio State Invitational.

Later in the evening, the medley relay team was at it again a night after they set the school record in the 200 medley relay. Kaden Smesko, Bottelberghe, Cason Wilburn and Chris Guiliano hit the pool for the 400 medley relay and broke the school record with a time of 3:06.28. They surpassed the previous record set in 2017 and was the second school record that the quartet took down this week.

The Irish had a trio of women qualify for the 200 butterfly finals. Coleen Gillilan led the way with the second-fastest time in the prelims of 1:55.02 to earn a spot in the A Finals. Fresh off an appearance in the 100 fly finals last night, Megan Deuel clinched a spot in the B finals with a B cut time of 1:57.21. Luciana Thomas also earned a spot in the B finals after finishing with a 1:56.73. In the finals of the 200 fly, Gillian placed eighth (1:55.85), Thomas in 11th (1:55.83) and Deuel finished 14th (1:56.72). All three women swam B Cut times in the prelims and the finals.

A pair of seniors earned finals spots on the men’s side as Zachary Smith and Max Miranda finished in the Top-24 of the prelims. Smith had the eighth-fastest time in the prelims of 1:42.99 to earn the last spot in the A Finals. Miranda finished with a 1:45.37 to clinch a spot in the C Finals. In the men’s finals, Smith finished eighth (1:44.63) and Miranda finished 20th (1:45.21).

Freshman Madelyn Christman claimed her first finals spot of the week after finishing 17th in the 100 backstroke prelims with a B cut time of 53.50. Charles Korndorffer (47.22) and Kaden Smesko (47.44) both earned B cut times and will race in the C Final of the 100 back. Smesko’s finals time clocked in as the fourth-best in program history.

In the finals for the 100 backstroke, Christman placed 19th overall with a B Cut time of 53.33. Smesko (46.98) and Korndorffer (47.09) finished back-to-back in 19th and 20th, both with B Cut times.

A pair of juniors punched their tickets for the women’s 100 breaststroke finals in the last swimming prelim of the morning session. Ellie Jew came in 13th to clinch a spot in the B Final with a time of 1:00.89. Not too far behind her was Elizabeth Fry with a 1:01.45 to qualify for the C Final. Jew finished 14th with a time of 1:00.68 and Fry finished 22nd with a time of 1:01.33. Jew’s time in the final ranks sixth-fastest in program history.

On the diving board, David Petrison and William Rains were back in action in their final event of the ACC Championships. Petrison finished 28th with 234.90 points and Rains finished 31st with 206.45.

On the final day of the ACC Championships on Saturday, 200 backstroke prelims start the action off. They are followed by the 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, women’s platform diving and the 1650 freestyle. The first prelims begin at 10 a.m. ET and will be broadcast on ACCNX.
