Irish Break School Record Twice and Medal to Close the ACC Championships

ATLANTA, Ga. — On the final day of the ACC Championships, the Irish set a new school record twice and earned a medal at the McAuley Aquatic Pavilion in Atlanta. Graduate student Kelly Straub picked up bronze in the platform diving event while freshman Chris Guiliano broke the school record in the 100 freestyle twice in the finals portion of the evening. At the end of the championships, the women finished in sixth with 651 points and the men finished eighth with 474 points.

In the 100 freestyle prelims, Sydney Whiting clinched a spot in the B Final for the women. On the men’s side, Guiliano (42.82) and Cason Wilburn (43.22) both clinched finals bids. Guiliano swam the second-fastest time in program history and Wilburn’s was the sixth-fastest.

Guiliano one-upped his prelim performance in the finals by breaking the school record with a time of 42.60. He finished 11th overall in the finals and Wilburn placed 22nd with a 43.52. Whiting performed well in the B Final, setting a PR and improved her eighth-fastest time in program history.

Later in the night, Guiliano broke his record in the lead-off leg of the 400 medley relay. He swam a 42.34 to set the new school record as the relay team of Guiliano, Cason Wilburn, Alec Delong and Stephan Lukashev finished sixth with a B Cut time of 2:51.68.

On the diving board, the Irish snagged their second medal of the championships. Straub qualified for her second finals of the championship after finishing in sixth in the prelims of the platform diving with a score of 264.05. Annie Wiese (231.85) finished 12th in the prelims and Callie Brady finished in 27th (199.05). Later in the finals, Straub put together the third-best score of 287.65 to earn bronze.

The Irish started the morning off with four finals qualifiers in the 200 backstroke prelims. Kallie Chelsvig (1:55.22), Annie Behm (1:56.68), Ana Herceg (1:57.51) and Madelyn Christman (1:57.73) all qualified for the finals. Chelsvig led the women once again in the finals, finishing 10th overall with a PR of 1:55.16. Christman also PR’d in the event when she finished first in the C Final with a time of 1:55.08. Christman now holds the seventh-best time in program history and Chelsvig is right behind her with the eighth-best time. Behm also cracked the top-10 list as her prelim time is the 10th-fastest.

On the men’s side, Kaden Smesko (1:44.89) earned a spot in the C Final. Smesko finished 23rd overall with a 1:45.21.

A trio of Irish qualified for the women’s 200 breaststroke finals. Sarah Bender (2:13.35), Ellie Jew (2:13.69) and Reese Lugbill (2:15.26) all earned finals swims with Bender in the B Final and Jew and Lugbill in the C Final. Bender placed 14th with a time of 2:13.54 while Jew finished 18th (2:13.07) and Lugbill finished 23rd (2:14.12). Jew now holds the sixth-fastest time in program history while Bender ranks eighth on the all-time list.

For the men, Josh Bottelberghe earned another spot in the A Final with the fifth-fastest time of the prelims (1:53.69). Tyler Christianson (1:55.62) and Sean Faikish (1:55.81) also earned spots in the 200 breast finals. Christianson will compete in the B Final and Faikish will compete in the C Final. Bottelberghe finished fourth in the A Final with a 1:52.61. Christianson placed 13th overall (1:54.47) while Faikish finished 19th (1:56.46).
