OXFORD, Ohio — The Miami RedHawks got two goals from Ryan Jones and one from Matt Christie to back up the 27-save shut out goaltending of Jeff Zatkoff as they defeated Notre Dame, 3-0, in front of a sell out crowd of 2,850 at Goggin Arena on Saturday night.

The loss snapped Notre Dame’s three-game unbeaten streak and dropped the Irish to 3-6-1 overall and 2-3-1 in CCHA play. Miami improves to 7-2-1 on the year and 6-1-1 in conference play.

For the Irish, the game was their final regular-season appearance at Goggin Arena as the 40-year old building will close following the season in favor of a brand new on campus facility. In 24 games at Goggin, the Irish were 7-15-2, including 0-5-1 in the last six meetings.

After a scoreless first period that saw Notre Dame out shoot Miami by a 15-8 margin, the RedHawks broke through late in the second period.

Jones, a sophomore left wing, gave the RedHawks a 1-0 lead at 17:24 of the second when he deflected a shot by Nathan Davis past Irish goaltender David Brown for his fourth goal of the year.

Jones would get his second of the game at 12:57 of the third period when he fired the rebound of a Davis shot past Brown, giving the RedHawks a 2-0 lead. The goal was Jones’ fifth of the season.

The Irish would get one last power-play chance at 13:46 of the third but Miami turned it into a short-handed goal. With the Irish moving the puck through the neutral zone, Matt Christie grabbed a loose puck and carried it in on Brown, firing a wrist shot from the slot that beat the Irish goaltender to his stick side for his second goal of the year.

In the game, the Irish were outshot by the RedHawks, 30-27. Brown finished with 27 saves in the game.

The shutout was the first against the Irish since a 1-0 shutout on March 12, 2004 when Notre Dame lost a 1-0 overtime decision to Michigan in game two of the first round of the CCHA playoffs.

Notre Dame returns to action next weekend with a home series versus Ohio State on Nov. 25-26 at the Joyce Center. Friday’s game will start at 7:35 p.m. while Saturday’s game has a 7:05 p.m. opening face off.
