PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The University of Notre Dame men’s swimming and diving team (5-6) improved to 4-1 in 2004, posting a pair of victories in a quadrangular dual meet in Trees Pool. The Irish defeated Maryland (4-6) 201-140 and topped Villanova (0-7) 282-51, but fell to seven-time defending BIG EAST champion #17 Pittsburgh (8-1) 228-123. The meet finished with 10 events Saturday morning after nine were contested on Friday.

Freshman Tim Kegelman (Yorktown, Va./Tabb H.S.) posted his second event victory in as many days by winning the 200-yard butterfly in 1:51.25. It was his best time of the season and places him as the fifth-quickest swimmer in Irish history in the event. On Friday, Kegelman won the 100 fly. His finish led a quartet of Irish student-athletes finishing in the top six. Sophomore Patrick Heffernan (Norcross, Ga./Norcross H.S.) finished fourth in 1:54.92, while sophomore Patrick O’Berry (Alpharetta, Ga./Milton H.S.) was right behind in 1:56.87 and senior J.R. Teddy (Spring, Texas/Klein H.S.) touched the wall in sixth place with a time of 1:57.10.

Notre Dame’s other victor on Saturday was freshman Ted Brown (Kokomo, Ind./Western H.S.), who took the top spot in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:32.60. Brown finished 2.39 seconds ahead of Pittsburgh senior Eric Limkemann, who has the fastest time among BIG EAST competitors in the event this season. Sophomore Jamie Lutkus (Granger, Ind./Penn H.S.) completed a meet in which he had a trio of top-three finishes. After coming in second in the 400 IM on Friday, he was second in the 200 IM and third in the 200 breaststroke on Saturday. He posted a 1:54.68 in the 200 IM, finishing just ahead of junior David Moisan (Fisherville, Ky./Louisville Male H.S.), who was third in 1:55.27 following a Friday victory in the 400 IM. In the 400 medley relay, Notre Dame’s team of sophomore Doug Bauman (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Preparatory School), sophomore Tim Randolph (Crown Point, Ind./Merrillville H.S.), Kegelman, and junior Frank Krakowski (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Preparatory School) took second place in 3:24.76. The quartet of freshmen Alan Carter (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park H.S.), Nick Fanslau (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn H.S.), Louis Cavadini (South Bend, Ind./Riley H.S.), and sophomore Drew Pittman (Williamsburg, Va./Lafayette H.S.) were fifth with a time of 3:33.11.

Cavadini led Notre Dame in the 50 freestyle with a season-best time of 21.21 and a fifth-place finish, while Krakowski was sixth in 21.27.

Freshman Scott Coyle (Indianapolis, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern H.S.), the lone Irish diver, finished sixth in the one-meter competition with a score of 205.80.

Notre Dame’s 231-point victory over Villanova set school dual-meet records for most points scored and largest margin of victory. The previous marks in both categories came in a 234-66 triumph at Boston College on Nov. 8, 1996.

The Irish have defeated Villanova in each of the last three seasons after dropping the first four dual meets against the Wildcats. It was the first-ever dual-meet contest between Notre Dame and Maryland.

Notre Dame will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 24, in a dual meet against #15 Northwestern, slated to begin at 2 p.m. (CST) in the Norris Aquatics Center.
