Irish Battled the Country’s Best at the St. John’s Invitational

JAMAICA, New York — The University of Notre Dame fencing teams started off 2020 facing some of the best teams in the country Saturday at the St. John’s Invitational. The top-ranked women’s squad went 3-2 on the day while the second-ranked men went 0-5 with both teams going up against top-10 opponents.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The women’s squad scored victories over No. 4 Harvard (18-9), No. 5 Ohio State (16-11), No. 8 St. John’s (14-13) while dropping matches to No. 6 Penn State (16-11) and No. 3 Columbia (16-11). All three squads finished with similar records, foil led the way at 24-21 while sabre and epee finished 23-22 on the day.

Sophomore sabreur Kara Linder paced the women’s squad with a 10-5 mark throughout the day. Junior foilist Stefani Deschner just missed the 10-win mark after going 9-4 and graduate student Amanda Sirico led the epee squad after going 7-2.

The men’s squad dropped two close matches to No. 5 Ohio State (14-13), No. 4 Penn State (14-13) and also fell to No. 3 Harvard (16-11), No. 7 St. John’s (16-11) and No. 1 Columbia (18-9). Sophomore sabreur Jared Smith led the way for the men with an 8-5 record while freshman epeeist Harrison Kimatian also hit the eight-win mark after going 8-7 on the day.

UP NEXT

The Irish will finish their east coast swing with the Philadelphia Invitational on Sunday. First match is against Yale and it begins at 8:30 a.m. ET.
