Irish Baseball Summer League Update

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – With almost all collegiate baseball summer leagues starting the second half of the season, many Notre Dame players have seen solid playing time for their respective squad. Rising senior Herman Petzold (Saint Clair Shores, MI/De LaSalle), rising junior David Casey (Whitefish Bay, Wisc./Whitefish Bay), rising junior Matt Scioscia (Westlake Village, CA/Encino Crespi Carmelite) and rising junior Joe Spizzirri (San Juan Capistrano, CA/JSerra Catholic) were all named to their respective leagues all-star games. Below is an update on how the Irish are faring thus far.

Billy Boockford, Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League, Southampton Breakers (18-12, 3rd Kaiser)
Has seen action in 21 games, all starts … batting .214 with a double, six runs scored, three stolen bases and seven RBI … has also made four appearances out of the bullpen … sports a 0-1 record with a 3.86 earned run average in 4.2 innings of work … surrendered six hits and five runs, only two of which were earned … has walked three and struck out six.

David Casey, California Collegiate League, Conejo Oaks (24-19, 3rd)
Has started and played in 38 of team’s 43 games … batting .321 with eight doubles, one triple, four home runs and 29 RBI … has drawn 18 walks and scored 15 runs … leads club in home runs, doubles (tied) and RBI … has also made four relief appearances out of the Oaks’ bullpen … owns an 0-0 record with a 1.12 earned run average in 8.0 innings of work … has allowed just one earned run on one hit with seven strikeouts and two walks … opponents are batting .042 against him.

Tommy Chase, New York Collegiate Baseball League, Geneva Redwings (14-18, 7th West)
Has seen action in 14 games with 11 starts … batting .184 with two doubles and six RBI … drawn nine walks and scored five runs … has also swiped five stolen bases.

Leighton Cooper, Cal Ripken, Sr. Collegiate Baseball League, Rockville Express (9-26, 8th)
Has seen action in 24 games and started 15 … batting .152 with two RBI and two stolen bases … drawn three walks and added six runs scored.

Evan Danieli, Cape Cod Baseball League, Falmouth Commodores (10-18-1, 5th)
Made three relief appearances before an injury has sidelined him for the rest of the summer … posted a 0-0 record with a 3.00 earned run average … surrendered one earned run on two hits … struck out four and walked three.

Brian Dupra, Cape Cod Baseball League, Harwich Mariners (13-17-0, 4th)
Has made eight appearances out of the bullpen … sports a 2-0 record with a 4.61 earned run average … has surrendered just nine hits in 13.2 innings of work, but has been hurt by three home runs … struck out 14 and walked four … opponents are hitting just .184 against him.

Matt Grosso, New England Collegiate Baseball League, Manchester Silkworms (8-21, 6th East)
Has played and started 11 games after spending couple weeks with Falmouth Commodores of the Cape Cod Baseball League … batting .244 with three doubles and three RBI … drawn two walks and scored three runs.

Will Harford, New York Collegiate Baseball League, Geneva Redwings (14-18, 7th West)
Has started and played in 29 games … hitting .299 with seven doubles and 10 RBI … drawn eight walks and scored nine runs.

Will Hudgins, Woodstock River Bandits, Valley Baseball League (18-17, 3rd Central)
Has made 13 appearances out of the bullpen … sports a 2-0 record with a 3.38 earned run average in 18.2 innings of work … surrendered 18 hits and nine walks to go along with 19 strikeouts … has also plunked nine batters … opponents are batting .261 against him.

Cole Johnson, Cape Cod Baseball League, Hyannis Mets (11-14-1, 4th)
Has made six appearances, five starts … sports a 1-2 record with a 3.90 earned run average in 27.2 innings of work … has allowed 25 hits with 31 strikeouts and nine walks … opponents are batting .240 against him … been victimized by five home runs.

Matt Katich, Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League, Stark County Terriers (9-18, 8th)
Has seen action in 13 games with nine starts … batting .167 with a double and RBI … drawn two walks and scored one run.

Casey Martin, Mountain Collegiate Baseball League, Laramie Colts (22-17, 2nd)
Has seen action in 24 games and started 22 (through team’s first 26 games; stats have not been updated) … batting .329 with nine doubles, two triples, a home run and nine RBI … has drawn 12 walks and scored 22 runs … owns a .417 on-base percentage and .532 slugging percentage … has also swiped three bases in four attempts … leads the team in doubles and triples … ranks second in batting average and RBI.

Eric Maust, Cape Cod Baseball League, Hyannis Mets (11-14-1, 4th)
Has made nine appearances, eight out of the bullpen … owns a 2-2 record with a 2.55 earned run average in 17.2 innings of work … yielded 16 hits and struck out 17 with five walks.

Cameron McConnell, Coastal Plains League, Forest City Owls (38-6, 1st West)
Has seen action in 19 games and started 17 … batting .344 with a double, home run and nine RBI … drawn four walks and scored eight runs … has thrown out six base stealers in 18 stolen base attempts … went 3-for-4 with a run scored and RBI on July 16 and then went 3-for-4 against with an RBI on July 18.

Todd Miller, Coastal Plains League, Florence RedWolves (27-18, 1st South)
Has made nine appearances and one start … sports a 1-1 record with a 5.82 earned run average … has surrendered 25 hits and six walks in 17.0 innings of work … has struck out 14.

David Mills, AABC Baseball League, Stan Musial
Sports a 4-0 record with a 0.49 earned run average in 36.0 innings of work … has struck out 58 and walked just three … also hitting .374 with nine doubles, three triples and 32 RBI … drawn 12 walks, scored 45 runs and swiped 15 stolen bases.

Herman Petzold, Coastal Plains League, Florence RedWolves (27-18, 1st South)
Has seen action in 34 games and started 28 … batting .301 with two doubles, one triple, one home run and 21 RBI … has drawn 15 walks and scored 16 runs … owns a .395 on-base percentage … has committed just four errors in 142 fielding chances, good for a .972 fielding percentage … leads the team in batting.

Ryan Richter, Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League, Grand Lake Mariners (21-9, 2nd)
Has made 10 appearances and three starts … owns a 2-2 record with a 2.78 earned run average and one save in 22.2 innings of work … has surrendered 20 hits and struck out 13 with 10 walks … opponents are batting just .235 against him.
