NOTRE DAME, Ind. — A fun tradition for the South Bend community from 2008-10 will be renewed Tuesday night when the University of Notre Dame baseball team makes the short drive over to Four Winds Field for an exhibition, seven-inning contest with the community’s Class A Minor League Baseball team — the South Bend Cubs.

First pitch is slated for 6 p.m. (ET) with the gates set to open at 5 p.m. (ET). Tickets are $5 and can be purchased online at SouthBendCubs.com or by calling the stadium box office at 574-235-9988.All proceeds from gate revenue are going to be donated to the South Bend Cubs’ chosen charity — South Bend’s The Center for the Homeless — and the Irish baseball squad’s chosen charity — the Pete Frates #3 Fund.

The Pete Frates #3 Fund, a common charity for the Irish baseball squad, raises money and awareness to former Boston College baseball player Pete Frates’ fight against Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), which is most commonly referred to as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. Irish head coach Mik Aoki coached Frates during his days as the head skipper of the Eagles.

“We really like this partnership with the baseball program at Notre Dame,” said Joe Hart, President of the South Bend Cubs. “It’s a great opportunity for both teams to come together and just have fun for the community. There’s a lot of respect between our organizations; we share the same values and spirit of the game.”

For the Irish, the exhibition contest renews a tradition that began under former head coach Dave Schrage. Notre Dame exhibitioned the South Bend franchise — then known as the South Bend Silver Hawks — for three seasons from 2008-10.

Under former head coach Paul Mainieri the Irish played an exhibition game against Major League Baseball’s Tampa Bay Devil Rays (now just Tampa Bay Rays) in 2001 in St. Petersburg, Florida.

Fans that can’t make it out to Four Winds Field Tuesday night can follow the exhibition contest through WatchND’s audio broadcast or by tracking live stats. Links for both are on UND.com.
