Notre Dame, Ind. – The Iowa State women’s golf team carried its hot play over from Saturday’s opening two rounds into Sunday’s third and final round to take home the Fifth Annual Notre Dame Invitational title by five strokes over Washington State on Sunday, Sept. 5. The Cyclones, who eclipsed the invitational’s previous mark for the lowest single round total with a 294 in Saturday afternoon’s second round, entered Sunday’s play with a seven stroke lead and did not relinquish the advantage. Their 54-hole total of 902 is another invitational record. Washington State fired a 907, while the Irish were seven strokes in back of the Cougars to round out the top three of the 17-team field at the par 72, 6,003-yard Warren Golf Course. Iowa State’s Louise Kenney carded an even-par 216 (71-73-72) for the invitational to help the Cyclones complete the team and individual championship sweep. Her total shattered the invitational’s previous lowest three-round total by nine strokes. Kim Welch of Washington State and Notre Dame’s Karen Lotta (Los Angeles, CA/Marymount), who was playing as an individual and not a member of the scoring five for her team, tied for second place as they each fired a five-over par 221. Lotta, a senior, shot a four-under par 68, which is a Warren Golf Course record, in Sunday’s third round. Irish sophomore Noriko Nakazaki (Hanover Park, IL/Hoffman Estates) carded her best round of the tournament on Sunday with a one-over par 73. She placed seventh overall with a 54-hole total of 227. Notre Dame juniors Katie Brophy (Spokane, WA/Gonzaga Prep) and Lauren Gebauer (Columbus, OH/Upper Arlington) each shot a 230 to finish in a five-way tie for 12th along with sophomore Stacy Brown (The Woodlands, TX/The Woodlands), another non-scoring member for the Irish. Freshman Jane Lee (Palos Verdes Estates, CA/Peninsula) was one stroke back to tie for 17th, while her Irish teammate Suzie Hayes (Dublin, Ireland/Loreto College) completed competition with a 234 to place in a tie for 22nd overall. “I really feel pretty good about how everything went,” stated Notre Dame head coach Debby King, whose team posted its best-ever three-round total in the invitational. “I think we shot about 20-strokes better than we did in this tournament last year. We had an overall improvement from a year ago, but we faced tougher competition this time.” Log onto www.und.com or call the Notre Dame athletics hotline at (574) 631-3000 to keep track of the Irish women’s golf team during their 2004-05 campaign.
