Iowa State Leading After Day One of Notre Dame Women's Golf Invitational

Notre Dame, Ind. – The Iowa State women’s golf team fired a record-breaking 36-hole total of 598 to establish the lead following the first two rounds of the Fifth Annual Notre Dame Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 4. The Cyclones shattered the invitational’s previous mark for lowest single round total by 10 strokes as they shot a 294 during the afternoon’s second round. Their two-round total of 598 is another invitational standard. Washington State is seven strokes back in second place, while the Irish are third with a score of 612 going into tomorrow’s final round at the par 72, 6,003-yard Warren Golf Course. Iowa State was led by Louise Kenney, who sits atop the individual standings after carding an even-par 144 (71-73) on the day. Her total is a record for the lowest 36-hole total at a Notre Dame Invitational. Washington State’s Kim Welch is one shot back in second place and Southwest Missouri State’s Sally Hinton is tied for third along with Christi Athes of Iowa State as they each carded a four-over par 148. Athes and Marshall’s Allyson Hatcher both fired a 70 in the second round to set another invitational standard for the lowest single round by an individual. Notre Dame’s Katie Brophy (Spokane, WA/Gonzaga Prep) is tied for sixth with a seven-over par 151 (74-77). Three Irish golfers are part of a five-way tie for 14th place. Lauren Gebauer (Columbus, OH/Upper Arlington), Jane Lee (Palos Verdes Estates, CA/Peninsula), and Noriko Nakazaki (Hanover Park, IL/Hoffman Estates) each carded a 10-over par 154. Notre Dame’s Suzie Hayes (Dublin, Ireland/Loreto College) fired a 158 to cap off a solid day for the Irish. The third and final round of competition gets underway on Sunday with a shotgun start beginning at 8:00 a.m. (EST).
