Huddle Wins Bronze at NYC Marathon

NOTRE DAME, Ind. — Notre Dame alumna and 2016 Olympian Molly Huddle took home the bronze medal in her debut at the TCS New York City Marathon on Sunday. 2009 graduate Patrick Smyth finished 10th overall in the men’s race.

Huddle, a 2006 graduate, finished in third place with a time of 2:28:13. She was the top finisher from the United States, crossing the finish line just 3:47 behind the gold medalist.

One of roughly 50,000 finishers, including 36,430 Americans, Huddle began the race around 9 a.m. ET and ran through the buroughs of Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Manhattan. She was the top U.S. finisher from both the men’s and women’s races, and the first Americn to make the NYC marathon podium since 2010.

Smyth, a native of Salt Lake City, Utah, completed Sunday’s marathon in 2:16:34, placing 10th overall and sixth among American male runners.

The 2016 women’s first-place finisher and Kenya native Mary Keitany, owns three of the top-20 times in the history of the women’s NYC Marathon. The last time an American woman won the event was in 1977, when Miki Gorman finished in first place (2:43:10).

Huddle represented Notre Dame at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, running the fastest 10,000m time in United States history and placing sixth overall. She completed the race in 30:13.17, surpassing the previous American record of 30:22.22, set by Shalane Flanagan during the 2008 Olympics.

She won both the 5,000m and 10,000m events at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials, becoming the first woman in history to win both races in the same year. Huddle opted to run solely in the 10,000m event in Rio.

A native of Elmira, New York, Huddle was a 10-time All-American during her time at Notre Dame. She was named all-BIG EAST 15 times and won seven conference titles as a member of the Irish track and field program.
