SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Notre Dame women captured the 2000 Notre Dame Invitational with a strong showing on the final day of competition, while the men finished second behind Michigan State. The women, who were second after Friday’s competition, finished with 1,404 points, followed by Denison (1,245.50), Michigan State (1,147.50), Harvard (1,088), and Western Kentucky (990). Michigan State won the men’s competition with a total of 1,451 points, followed by Notre Dame (1,346), Western Kentucky (1,207), Denison (1,176) and Columbia (946).

The women were paced by freshman Marie Labosky, junior Kelly Hecking and junior diver Heather Mattingly. Labosky finished first in the 1650 freestyle with a time of 16:51.64. Hecking won the 200 backstroke, her third top finish of the meet, with an NCAA consideration time of 2:00.54. Mattingly won the 3m diving competition at 550.55, a new meet record. The women also recieved a strong performance from freshman Laurie Musgrave, who finished second in the 200 breaststroke at 2:21.33.

The men received strong performances from juniors Jonathon Pierce and David Horak. Pierce won the 1650 freestyle with a time of 15:51.62, while Horak won the 200 backstroke at 1:49.90. The win gave Horak his third first-place finish of the meet. Irish diver Andy Maggio also had a good showing as he finished second with a score of 309.35.

The women are back in action January 2-3 at the Rainbow Invitational in Honolulu, Hawaii. The men will compete in the Christmas Competition in Brandon, Fla., on January 6.
