Wegwerth Earns NCAA & B1G First Star Honors

NOTRE DAME, Ind. — After helping the #2/#3 Fighting Irish hockey team win the 2018 Ice Breaker Championship, senior Joe Wegwerth was named both the NCAA Men’s Ice Hockey and Big Ten’s First Star of the Week on Tuesday morning (Oct. 16).

Wegwerth opened the 2018-19 campaign with a three-point effort (1-2-3) in a 6-6 tie against Mercyhurst on Friday (Oct. 12). After taking down the Lakers in a shootout, the Irish advanced to the championship game on Saturday (Oct. 13), where Wegwerth netted the game-winning goal to go with an assist in a 3-0 victory over #5 Providence.

Wegwerth’s three points against Mercyhurst marked a career high total and he now has five multi-point games in an Irish uniform. Eight of his 16 career goals have come on the power play.
