Hockey Announces 2005-06 Schedule

Notre Dame, Ind. – University of Notre hockey coach Jeff Jackson today announced the 2005-06 Notre Dame hockey schedule. The 35-game schedule includes 34 regular season games along with an exhibition game versus the University of Waterloo to open the season on Friday, Oct. 14.

During the 2005-06 season, nine of the 11 CCHA teams will play at least one game at the Joyce Center as the 28-game league schedule features two-game home series with Bowling Green, Ohio State, Lake Superior State, Miami and Alaska Fairbanks plus home-and-home series with Michigan, Michigan State, Western Michigan and Ferris State. Only Northern Michigan and Nebraska-Omaha will not visit Notre Dame this season.

The Irish are included in a rivalry pairing this season that includes Bowling Green, Ohio State and Miami. They will face each of those teams four times this year with two games versus the remainder of the CCHA.

Besides the 28-game CCHA schedule, the Irish will play four games versus teams from the WCHA and two with the ECAC.

On Friday, Oct. 21, Notre Dame opens the campaign by visiting NCAA semifinalist Colorado College in Colorado Springs, Colo. The following night, Saturday, Oct. 22, the Irish travel north to Denver, Colo., to face 2005 NCAA champion – the University of Denver.

Notre Dame then returns home to open the home schedule with a two-game series with ECAC opponent, Princeton University on Friday, Oct. 28 and Sat., Oct. 29. Game time on Friday night is 7:35 p.m. with Saturday’s contest set to start at 7:05 p.m.

The third WCHA team on the Irish schedule is the Minnesota State Mavericks from Mankato, Minn. Notre Dame will play a home-and-home series with the Mavericks, traveling to Mankato on Tues., Dec. 6 and then face them again on Saturday, Dec. 10 at the Joyce Center.

The Irish will get the season started on Saturday, Oct. 8 with their annual Blue/Gold Intrasquad scrimmage at the Joyce Center that will begin at 7:05 p.m.

This year’s schedule also features three hockey-football weekends. The Irish play host to Windsor in hockey on Friday, Oct. 14 and then meet USC on Oct. 15 on the gridiron. On Nov. 4, Notre Dame plays host to Michigan with Nov. 5 featuring football versus Tennessee and the final weekend occurs on Nov. 11 when the Irish icers meet Bowling Green at the Joyce Center and football hosts Navy on Saturday, Nov. 12.

Game times for all Notre Dame home games are 7:35 p.m. for weekday games (Thursday and Friday) and 7:05 p.m. on Saturday nights. The Sunday, Dec. 18 game with Lake Superior will face off at 2:05 p.m.

The CCHA playoffs will have a different look this season. The opening round (March 3-5) will be a best two-of-three series at campus sites between teams ranked fifth through 12th in the final standings. The top four teams will draw a bye. The second round (March 10-12) will be best-of-three series between the top four teams and the winners of the first round. The four winners then advance to Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, Mich., for the semifinals and finals on March 17-18.
