Harris, Nuguse Named ACC Performers of the Week

GREENSBORO, N.C. — After an extremely successful weekend on both coasts, the Notre Dame track and field program has two members named Atlantic Coast Conference Track Performers of the Week as announced Wednesday, April 24. Sophomore standout Yared Nuguse earned men’s track honors while graduate student Jessica Harris was named co-performer on the women’s side.

“Jessica’s time currently ranks her as the fastest 1,500m runner in the NCAA,” Hatherly-Piane Head Coach Matt Sparks said. “Her confidence to compete with the women she ran with at Virginia was amazing. She is really learning how to race the 1500m at an elite level.”

Harris ran to a first place finish at the Virginia Challenge, recording the nation’s leading time in the women’s 1,500m race (4:13.04). Getting a feel for the upcoming ACC Championships, Harris registered her best time of the season and tops the conference in the race by over three seconds.

“Yared has continued to progress after his fantastic indoor season,” assistant coach Sean Carlson said. “Bryan Clay was a great learning experience for him to get in a faster race and we look to build off of it going in to ACCs and NCAAs.”

Finishing third in the 1,500m run at the Bryan Clay Invitational in 3:38.32, Nuguse boasts the third best time in the nation and tops the ACC. His personal best performance came just 0.03 seconds shy of the school record and places him second in program history.

Yared has run a well in championship settings over the last two years but this was one of his first effort to compete in his individual event on a national stage,” Sparks concluded. “His time was the second fastest time in Notre Dame history and the third fastest time in the NCAA this year. Once we get Yared a little more work on the track, we think he can challenge anyone in the country.”
